Obama Supports Gay Marriage
In an interview with The Advocate Barack Obama really sent up a flare to the country as to how dangerous his Presidency would actually be:
Obama: And finally, an area that I’m very interested in is making sure that federal benefits are available to same-sex couples who have a civil union. I think as more states sign civil union bills into law the federal government should be helping to usher in a time when there’s full equality in terms of what that means for federal benefits.
Interviewer: I assume you’re talking about the Defense of Marriage Act.
Obama: Absolutely, and I for a very long time have been interested in repeal of DOMA.
WHAT! Helloooooo! I’m calling the Republican Party. This is what your ads should be about. Many people on the right are not very excited about McCain but they will certainly be scared of Obama after this.
Now, just a refresher, DOMA was passed by Congress by a vote of 85-14 in the Senate and a vote of 342-67 in the House of Representatives and was signed by President Bill Clinton on September 21, 1996. (Notice only 14 Senators voted against it. That’s usually a sign it’s pretty out there)
DOMA stipulated that No state need treat a relationship between persons of the same sex as a marriage, even if the relationship is considered a marriage in another state. The Federal Government may not treat same-sex relationships as marriages for any purpose, even if concluded or recognized by one of the states.
Now, the moment that Obama were to repeal DOMA gay marriage would by law forcibly accepted in every state of the union because some states have already passed a gay marriage bill.
The repeal of DOMA is a huge third rail. Even Hillary who has vociferously courted the gay vote, even sending her daughter on gay bar crawls throughout the country, has not gone this far. Hillary said she would look into it and she gave lip service to equal rights but nothing like this.
The funny thing is that even for Obama this is a sudden turnaround. Obama in 2006 said on the Senate floor, “Personally, I do believe that marriage is between a man and a woman.” But now because Obama is feeling the heat from Hillary he’s courting votes by tacking left. Really left. This is a very big deal and another sign that Obama is not ready for prime time and would be ruinous to our country.
