You remember Sinead O Connor, right? The loopy Irish songstress who ripped up a photo of Pope John Paul II. It was a moment that would ignite a global firestorm and brand her an industry and religious pariah, but 15 years after Sinead O’Connor ripped up a photo of Pope John Paul II on live television, the Irish iconoclast says she has no regrets. In fact, she said to the Canadian Press: “To my dying day, apart from having my children, that’s the thing I’m proudest of.”

Well guess what. She now says she liked JPII. I wonder what she would’ve done if she hadn’t. Well, I guess we’ll find out. I know you’ll be shocked by this but the bald singer doesn’t like Pope Benedict too much. I know. I’m shocked too. I hear the Pope’s all broken up about it too.

In a recent article, O’Connor mused on what would happen if anyone ripped up an image of Pope Benedict XVI, the controversial leader who took John Paul’s place.

“I don’t think this pope is as beloved as the last one,” O’Connor concluded. “It wouldn’t even be noticed if anyone ripped up a picture of this one. I don’t think (anyone) would bat an eyelid…He’s a bit clinical, isn’t he? I actually had a lot of fondness for the last one, the same as everyone else did, you know.”

Then the reporter of the piece adds this unsubstantiated editorial comment calling the pope, “a hardline traditionalist.”

O’Connor then oddly promises that wouldn’t even consider repeating such an act today. What? Attacking the Pope? Didn’t you just…? Never mind. Now 40 and the mother of four, O’Connor said in the piece she’s learned that there’s power in subtlety.

I’m not sure if she understand what that word means.

When asked to explain why she ripped up the picture of the pope she said:

“I know why I did it, I know why it was important, I know what it meant to me…There’s no point in me trying to make a whole lot of other people understand it because it doesn’t matter. I don’t feel the need for it to be understood.”

Well that’s good.
