A university professor in Australia has written an article in a medical journal suggesting that couples who have more than one baby should pay a $5,000 tax for supposedly hurting the environment.
As awful and idea as this is you must admit it’s not even surprising anymore. This got me thinking about how upside down everything is. As Christian individuals we are supposed to work for the betterment of others. A government’s main responsibility, on the other hand, is to cherish and protect individual rights.
Increasingly, Western culture seems to promote individuals seeking exclusively their own pleasure while governments seem to be wholly concerned with the collective good over individual rights.
The further we remove God from our lives and the public sphere I would expect this dangerous trend to continue. And what seems ridiculous today will be codified into law in a decade.

In a country of any size, never mind Australia, you’ll be certain to find at least one person with a crazy idea, and the ability to draw attention to it. Such is less of an outrage, than is that person’s ability to persuade a gullible public. It just might not go over well this time, if only because some people just love their own children.

But it will find support. I have enough faith in my fellow man’s foolishness to sleep well in my certaintly that we are all cramming ourselves into the handbasket.
