Fr. Andrew Greeley thinks you’re racist. If you’re a regular reader of CMR, I’d have to imagine you’re probably not a big fan of Barack Obama for many legitimate reasons including his embrace of infanticide. But Fr. Greeley knows that you’re just making up those reasons as a way to hide your true reason for not liking Obama which is that you’re secretly a racist!
Sen. Barack Obama’s victory, we are told by the cheering sections, was a great victory for the American dream. Racism may well be in retreat. In the immortal words of Humphrey Bogart: Not so fast, Louis. The United States looks pretty good now — for a change. What if Obama is defeated? The whole world and most African Americans will scream “racism!” Better not to try at all than to try and fail.
In fact, only a little more than half of the Democratic voters chose the senator from Illinois as their candidate. Were the other voters racist? Influenced by racism? Inclined to racism, which they hide even from themselves? Surely all of these factors were at work, but it is virtually impossible with the current research technology to sort them out. Moreover, is the voter a bigot who says — to himself or others — “He’s too young for it,” “I don’t know anything about him,” “He’s an elitist,” “He’s just a lot of fancy talk,” “The country isn’t ready for a man like that,” “He’s weak in his support of Israel,” “He’s Muslim, possibly the anti-Christ!” Are these hints of lurking prejudice? Are the voters of regular members of the Democratic coalition — Hispanics and union members — against Obama partly because of racism?
How many of the male readers of this column who are habitues of bars, locker rooms, commuter train bull sessions, pool rooms and men’s clubs have not heard the indigenous racial slurs of such environments applied to Obama?
Who’s this guy hanging out with? Is Fr. Greeley hanging out with people who drop racial slurs on a regular basis? Seems to me he needs to start hanging out with a better group of people.
Then Fr. Greeley inexplicably defends Obama sitting in the pews at Trinity while Jeremiah Wright damned America.
And surely some of the explicit chatter during the campaign was racist, especially the obsession with the various clergy who mounted the pulpit of his church. By what stretch of sick logic could the candidate be responsible for what his clergy said and did?
Listen, Obama’s not responsible because his ears heard Rev. Wright’s foolishness. He’s responsible for his little feeties not walking out the door the moment he heard it.
But, according to Greeley, no matter your reasons for not loving Obama, it’s racist. Come on. You know it, you closet racist pig:
Certainly there are solid political and personal reasons that some Americans might have had for voting against the senator that would not be in principle racist. He is one of the most “liberal” members of Congress. He stole the election from a woman who was entitled to it. He is one of the “boys” beating up on the female candidate. He is a not a patriot dedicated to final victory in Iraq. He is weak on national security. He lacks experience. He supports abortion. Yet behind these arguments, might racism lurk?
So no matter what, if you’re against Obama you’re a racist. So I have one question, what does it make me if I think a priest is crazy?

Well he did start out by calling half of Democrats racist.
As for myself I can’t remember hearing anyone anywhere make a racial slur in twenty years. I guess he must only hang out with liberals.
I guess that we also have Fr. Greeley admiting that he is voting for the most extereme pro-abortion candidate ever, one who supports homosexual marriages, ESCR, euthanasia, cloning, etc. But I guess that won’t surprise anybody.
June 12, 2008 at 6:34 am
I guess in Fr. Greeley’s eyes I am self-hating. I wish I could vote for Obama! I would love to have a black president but he is too pro-abortion and will allow same-sex marriage as soon as he can. I want America to stay America not become like Canada or Britain where its basically illegal to hold true the teachings of the Church.

It doesn’t matter that Obama is not actually performing the late-term/born-alive-let-the-baby-die abortions he is so in favor of, he is holding the same tools of destruction as Dr. Tiller (“The Killer”) with his strong pro-abort views. It’s B.O.’s soul, not his skin color, that’s of concern to me. And that soul seems very dark indeed!
(By the way, does anyone know who Fr. McBrien backs for president?)

Sounds so narrow. Do you suppose he’s railing at himself?
June 12, 2008 at 1:01 pm
Who is Greeley kidding? Obama is WHITE! Or at least as white as he is black. The “first black candidate” is also equally the umpteenth white candidate. So perhaps I secretly hate myself.
June 12, 2008 at 1:23 pm
Let’s if I have this right.
I think I oppose Sen. Obama because of his dishonesty, lack of integrity, his callous positions on the life issues, his support of gay “marriage”, his disastrous foreign policy, his horrific fiscal policy, and his friendships with anti-American, anti-semitic radicals, but Fr. Greeley knows that these are all sham reasons and that I’m really a racist.
Either that, or else…
Fr. Greeley thinks he supports Sen. Obama because he’s black, and because of his positions on charity, openness, bi-partisanship, and peace, but I know that these are sham reasons and that Fr. Greeley is really a pro-abortion sodomite.
I wonder which one I’ll choose?

Mathew,
Like St. Francis, I could never say anything bad about a priest. But the priest should not say anything bad about us loyal children of Jesus’ teachings and His Church.
You are a real man for defending the Truth! Good for you. Keep it up. The Great Saints of the Church defended like you just did. Do not be afraid of anyone. Remember JPII shaking a finger at that priest in South America. Good for him!
More finger shaking! Needed!
And, I see you will not stop for all the tea in China.
Good Grief! His remarks are nutty. Symptomatic too. He needs to test his water. Let’s pray for him tomorrow with our morning prayers everyone. You never know about conversions and grace prayed for.
June 12, 2008 at 2:12 pm
It’s a little sad when we have to pray for the conversion of priests but I’m with you.
June 12, 2008 at 3:00 pm
Rose, that priest has just been elected President of the UN General Assembly!!! (Best we all say the “Holy Michael the Archangel” prayer–often)
June 12, 2008 at 3:32 pm
Dear Anonymous,
Yes, I know. That is why I mentioned it. I guess they need us to keep them in line before they get so carried away by you know who.
Thank you, I will say that prayer more often to be sure now. Heavenly power needed!
June 12, 2008 at 3:34 pm
I’ll tell you what it makes you: a racist. Duh! In case you hadn’t noticed, everything comes down to either race, sex, or hair color because otherwise we might have to seriously debate the actual ideas, and, let’s face it, when democrats talk about values and ideals they lose.
June 12, 2008 at 7:13 pm
So if someone doesn’t vote for McCain, does that make them guilty of age discrimination?
June 12, 2008 at 9:31 pm
Oh, I’m definitely using age discrimination to combat the charge of racism. I’m sure it will come up sooner rather than later – thanks larryd!
I’ll add my prayers for Fr. Greeley. I had no idea that he had moved on from his tired, hackneyed novels into the realm of politics. May God help us all.

Of course, it’s just as racist to vote FOR someone because of his race than it is to vote AGAINST someone because of his race. Using Fr. Greeley’s logic, then, everyone of voting age in the United States is a racist. Those who vote FOR Obama will bear the suspicion of voting for him because he’s black. Those who vote AGAINST Obama will bear the suspicion of voting against him because he’s black. Even those who sit this one out will bear the suspicion of doing so because a black man is a candidate for president. All of this will apply equally to those who vote for or against McCain. So, we’re all racists!
BTW, it was a different priest at whom JPII shook his finger in Nicaragua, not the same one just elected President of the UN General Assembly. Just for clarification.

Matthew:
Besides being a racist, your criticism of Fr Greeley (and Fr. McBrien) clearly indicate you are anti-Christian, anti-Catholic, and anti-clerical. All your talk about saints, B16 and JP2 are clearly a smokescreen for spewing hatred. Your self-deprecating humor clearly indicates you hate even yourself. Come to think of it, is their anyone or anything you don’t hate?
Keep up the good work :-).

I think Fr. Greeley is a racist. He has shown no support for african american catholic, U.S. senate and U.S. presidential candidate Alan Keyes.
Fr. Greeley has also ignored and /or disobeyed the promulgated liturgical laws of the Church despite the repeated directions from the Congregation for Divine Worship’s prefect, the black african nigerian Cardinal Francis Arinze.
Greeley by his own logic must be a racist (in addition to being an author of soft -core porn.)
