I have been in Southern California all week and I have been amazed about the number of commercials that I have seen about Proposition 8 which would undo the made up right to gay marriage in the state.
The commercials I have seen this week are numbering 10 to 1 against.(The money being spent on this must be staggering.) It seems that every other commercial on these past days urges “No on Prop 8” They tell you, it is about eliminating rights, about the right to marry, and so on. Take a look at the quotes used in the ad I have seen the most out here.
“drastic step to strip people of rights.” — Los Angeles Times
“out of state special interests have pumped in millions.” — California Nurses Association
“major threat to basic Constitutional rights.” — League of Women Voters
“an unnecessary initiative.” — La Opinion
“No person should suffer discrimination.” — League of Women Voters
“California laws should treat everyone equally.” — California Teachers Association
Remarkably, in all the ads that I have seen this week there are certain words that have been conspicuous by their absence. The words gay or homosexual are nowhere to be found. They know that they cannot truly say what the issue is because people would overwhelmingly reject it.
Forty years ago, the pro-abortion lobby effectively hijacked that common use and understanding of words to convince the public that the murder of innocents was a choice and that to object to such an absurd notion was to be against “choice” and to seek to impose your will on another and her body. They assiduously avoid ever calling abortion by its right name and never describe what their euphemisms result in, a dead baby. They hijacked the language and have been killing ever since.
The gay lobby, tutored at the feet of their monstrous mentors in the abortion lobby, have learned the lesson well. Win the battle for language and you will win the war. So now as they wage war against traditional marriage, they know that the battle for language is a crucial front in the war. Let us not cede one inch of this territory.

There does not exist a right to practice what is naturally wrong.

Not to undercut your argument, because I think there’s a lot of truth in it, but I’ve seen No on 8 ads that mention homosexuality. I’m thinking specifically of the one with the older couple talking about their gay son/daughter (can’t recall which).

wiki: The phrase was introduced to English in 1542 in Nicolas Udall’s translation of Erasmus, Apophthegmes, that is to saie, prompte saiynges. First gathered by Erasmus:
Philippus aunswered, that the Macedonians wer feloes of no fyne witte in their termes but altogether grosse, clubbyshe, and rusticall, as they whiche had not the witte to calle a spade by any other name then a spade.

J. Christian,
Perhaps so, but my sampling this week certainly didn’t look that way. At this point, they seem focused on obfuscation.

How is this a rule that you can, if you choose, marry one person of the opposite sex discrimination? It’s the same rule for everyone and justified by basic anatomy and reproductive biology.
We’ve by and large forgotten what the purpose of marriage is. Heterosexuals need to start treating marriage as a self-giving covenant rather than a selfish contract that can be broken at will. If we did this we wouldn’t be in the mess were in now.

Can I also leave a point of correction? It’s not that the homosexual lobby has taken pointers from the abortion lobby. They’re the same people. The abortion lobby is comprised of radical leftists who want to eliminate Christianity from America, as does the homosexual lobby. Furthermore, abortion and homosexuality were originally proposed as ways to effectively control “overpopulation,” particularly in “brown,” developing countries, but of course this has spread much more effectively in developed ones. It also has received support from the environmentalist lobby, which believes that the world is being destroyed by overpopulation of humans (but not viruses, microbial plagues, or insects, strangely enough) and still feels that we need to radically restrict the reproductive rights of people outside those lobbies. So basically we are facing a concerted effort by the Godless to impose atheistic existentialist philosophy on the world. Who’s imposing on others now?

It’s very depressing to find out how many of my friends from high school are against Prop 8. I recently got sucked into the timekiller that is Facebook, and saw that so many are pro-Obama and No on 8 supporters. So. Cal. school, of course.

er said… Furthermore, abortion and homosexuality were originally proposed as ways to effectively control “overpopulation,”
LOL. I sincerely doubt you can impose or introduce homosexuality as a way to control overpopulation. If this were the case, I’m sure the commie Chinese would have changed their flag from red to pink years ago.
Patrick – you said “…Proposition 8 which would undo the made up right to gay marriage in the state.” I don’t disagree with your sentiment in this post, but I would point out that ALL civic rights are “made up”. Men and women could ALWAYS marry in the Catholic church as a sacrament- NOT a right, wheras in the US the RIGHT to marry was in fact denied slaves, then denied those who practiced mescegenation (the “mixing of races”) and those deemed as mentally challenged. All of these rights or lack thereof are “made up”, meaning they are decided upon by the civic authorities with or without the consent of the populace.
I’m simply making this point since many Americans blur the lines of reality between civic rights, which are ALL “made up” and that which comes from God. I cringe and roll my eyes when I hear people refering to their “God given right to vote”.

I know it sounds ridiculous, but really, abortion, contraception, homosexuality, sterilization, and forced migration were all proposed as ways to control overpopulation. Check out “Fatal Misconception,” a book for which I hold no real love because of the author’s effort to castigate the Church, but one that is well-documented (for non-Church related information; the Church-related info is primarily anecdotal, surprise surprise). It may shock you…

Yup…sounds ridiculous. I don’t know of anyone who would simply begin to practice homosexuality in order to exercise population control. People can propose what they want. It doesn’t make it valid (or any less ridiculous).

Fight on, Patrick! Yes on 8 is right for many reasons – morally, legally, ethically.
Yes on Prop 8!
