Matthew, methinks you’re making too much of this. His comment was actually mildly funny.

you’re right. Making fun of an 87 year old widow is always funny.

Cower in fear, Bin Ladin; our next president picks on elderly widows.

Well, she did have a seance, no?

While senses of humor are funny, I am a bit disappointed to see our Presidential candidates have to do things like appear on SNL, and our President-elect mock a President’s widow in a press conference.
A commentator said he was trying to cover his obvious gaffe (“I have spoken to all the former Presidents, the living ones”)…reminded me of his comments on Memorial Day! I see dead people!

I’m no Obama fan, but he made a mistake (and heaven knows we don’t do that), called her, apologized directly to her (the same day even). He did no spin…admitted he made a mistake and moved on. Surely we Catholics can respect his contrition and move on. There are other things to get mad at..this isn’t one of them.

He later called to apologize to Mrs Reagan, which was another gaffe. Mrs Reagan was into astrology; it was Mrs Clinton who was into seances.
This isn’t the South Side, Barry. It’s time to put on the long pants and grow the hell up.

**Buzzer** No. Hillary had seances to try and communicate with Eleanor Roosevelt. Nancy Reagan allegedly consulted with astrology.
What the heck is Barry’s deal with that “The Office of the President Elect” sign?

“What the heck is Barry’s deal with that “The Office of the President Elect” sign?”
The title of the president’s transition team was determined some weeks BEFORE the election, by the appropriate agencies charged with logistical and other areas of the transition. Granted, the title may not have been formally used before. It is now.
I work with people every day — non-political career civil service — who are currently directly involved with the transition. I know the above for a fact.

Fr. Bill,
The apology was good and warranted. I must ask, who is getting mad?
Is Matthew pointing this out getting mad? Is saying “stay classy” getting mad?
Seems like overreaction to a rather modest reaction.

“The Office of the President Elect”
David, the point is it’s typical of Obama, arrogant. It sounds incredibly pretenious, like his stupid seal he had on podiums while he was campaigning…

“David, the point is it’s typical of Obama, arrogant.”
I work in Washington, with non-political people associated with the transition. They were beginning preparations before Labor Day, and I am telling you, this title of “Office of the President-Elect” was being used by them as early as SEPTEMBER! I personally saw material being prepared, before anyone knew who the next President was going to be. This decision could not have originated with Obama.
If you’re going to take Obama to task for his judgment, get in line. But do it with the facts. That’s MY point.
