The European Parliament has voted 401 – 220 in favour of a report which calls for same-sex marriage and/or civil unions to be recognized across all EU states, says the Sydney Star Observer.
OK. So hypothetical question here: Because of laws precluding a British royal from marrying a Catholic, if Great Britain’s Prince William married..say… the gay Catholic Andrew Sullivan, Prince William would be ineligible to take the crown, not because he married a man but because Sullivan was Catholic?
Yeah, this European Union thing is working out great.

The EU: Amazingly inefficient at things that it should do, and amazingly efficient at things it shouldn’t (SS “marriage”) or that don’t matter (have you heard about the ridiculous legislation rejecting oddly-shaped produce?). Gah.

Europe’s not even a country, how’d they get a parliament? And who gave them the right to redefine marriage?

The greatest purpose “elephant in the room” purpose of the EU is not one of economics, but of preventing another genocide/continental war. And thus far, it has succeeded in that. Yes, a large majority of the EU laws passed are ridiculous, but you can sense a common thread: human rights of individuals, especially “minorities”.
BTW, last week there was yet another bid to strike down the anti-Catholic law from the constitution. I hope this one succeeds. It’s so hypocritical of the UK. But keep in mind, as per my comments above, it is the EU that is pressuring the UK to change the constitution. Like it or not, the EU is the driving force behind a lot of good. Just not always good.
And you are not too far off about Prince William.

Incidently, the day before I left the US (following the last election and passing of Prop 9) I was driving behind a flashy car and noticing the bumper-sticker, which read “Catholics = Moromons = Evangelicals = Hate”. I remember thinking, “Now THAT is hateful. I mean, comparing us to Mormons and Evangelicals like that!”

HRVAT I think the feeling is mutual. There are enough Croatians around here as is.

I seem to recall France considering a law to make sure runway models are not too skinny.

I think some of the Balatic natoins have laws against same-sex marriage, also, frankly I don’t see Poland, Malta, Ireland, or Slovokia going along with this. For as bad as some of the EU headlines are the reality is that the EU is largely ignored on stuff like this, outside of a few north-west European countries. Heck, even France won’t accept gay-marrige.

Prince William couldn’t marry Andrew Sullivan, because A.S. is already married… 😉
I thought France sent a married gay man to the Holy See as ambassador (the Holy See turned him down – and the aforementioned blogger was on his horse, bashing the Pope for it). I inferred from that that France already accepted gay marriage, but maybe not…?
