Commonweal Approves of Obama being the Commencement Speaker. David Gibson writes:
This should get the Irish fighting, along with lots of other Catholics. Or am I wrong?…Notre Dame certainly seems to be leading with its (her?) chin, but I think it’s a fine choice for many reasons: One, they invited Bush after he was elected, so the invite is justified if not imperative. And two, it offers Obama a Catholic setting to talk some about issues of central importance to Catholic, which have not received the hearing (so far) that he promised.
I’m loving this moral equivalence thing they’ve got going on here. Notre Dame invited Bush so they can invite Obama. Hey, George Bush didn’t support the murder of the unborn. George W. Bush didn’t OK the creation and killing of embryos for stem cell research.
Pope Benedict called the destruction of nascent life “today’s gravest injustice.” Abortion is the transcendent issue of the day. One can’t form a checklist of Catholic teachings and weigh and balance them by quantity on every issue. It’s been said often that not all issues are of equal gravity. The right to life outweighs all other concerns.

And you expected what from Commonweal, et al, fidelity to the Church’s teachings, exemplary moral standards, good judgment, common sense? Shall we also expect cats to bark and dogs to meow?
It’s call Schism…and it’s been here, de facto, for fifty years.

“Pope Benedict called the destruction of nascent life “today’s gravest injustice.” “
Can I have a source? I believe you, but sourcing it when I talk to others would be helpful.

Thanks. I should’ve done it earlier.

so Bush’s pro-death penalty was okay right? and killing people in war’s is okay?
I hope not, and I hope you were protesting when Bush did his commencement speech too.
I think you’re right on the right to life, but I’ve heard enough from “christian” hypocrites who think that abortion is somehow different from killing.
Oh well, enjoy the protest!
Cheers

Anon–
Cut out the seamless garment crap. According to the teaching of the Catholic Church, the death penalty is permitted if discourage. Also, a just war is permitted. Abortion and ESCR on the other hand are always forbidden. Can’t see the difference? Open your eyes and take your brain out of neutral.

Hello Anon,
Bush spoke in 2001, well before the Iraq War or even 9/11.
That leaves the death penalty. I was disappointed in his too-ready resort to it in Texas. But the Catechism, like the long history of Catholic teaching on this, is clear: the Church is not categorically opposed to capital punishment. It *is* categorically opposed to abortion and euthanasia. And Obama is the enthusiastic supporter of both “rights” of any president we have ever had.

“George Bush didn’t support the murder of the unborn” Perhaps he didn’t support it, but his war certainly has created havoc for the unborn and pregnant women in Iraq and Afghanistan:

And, BTW, isn’t David Gibson a journalist? Is he now writing Commonweal’s editorials or is this quote taken from their blog? Unless what you posted is an editorial statement, I don’t think that you can state that he is speaking for the publication.
