I have noticed that other Catholic bloggers get all their props while I toil in obscurity. Other bloggers get invited to bloggers conventions or on radio shows, get mentioned in news articles or even get to appear in movies. Heck, I half expect to see American Papist guest hosting “American Idol” any day now. But me, I get none of that.
Now I will admit that I have had my moments of doubt. Am I a non-celebrity because I am boring? Am I not sought after because I am oafish and offensive? I began to wonder if I would be required to look deeply and honestly at my own flaws and thus be forced to grow as human being and as blogger.
Fortunately, it did not come to that. After reading this very enlightening interview with “Texas Chainsaw” actress Jessica Biel, I have come to an entirely different conclusion. The reason I am ignored by everyone with taste is that I –Am — Too — Hot!
That’s right. I realize now that it is my impressive good looks that are holding me back! Jessica tells us that being so good looking is a turnoff for people. Who knew?
Is being too good-looking really a problem for an actress?
“Yeah, it really is a problem. I have to be blunt.”
If it can happen in Hollywood – it can happen in the Catholic blogosphere too. I am so glad I read this today, I almost signed up for a scrap-booking class.

OK, by looking at your “followers”…I’m guessing that I’m way hotter than you are!
Of course, if I would spend some time writing instead of reading your blog, I might
have more “fans”.

Has it occurred to Ms. Biel that the only reason she has ever been given a single “acting” job is because of her looks?
Super talented people struggle to get noticed every day. Biel is not one of them.

All humility aside. I am more famous, better looking, and I live in TX, where everything is better.
Alright – the world’s most humble man is back to being humble.

I would like to think that even at the ripe old age of 63 I’m pretty hot.
Old farts still try and pick me up in the produce section of the grocery store. I’m routinely accosted at the magazine section and told how wonderful I smell (Aromatics Elixir is my secret), and younger men (but still way too old for moi), like to hang out with me.
But I must be wrong. Why? Because I see all my friends on the sidebar of Creative Minority Report and I don’t see my name. So there you have it! I’m not hot at all. It is all a figment of my post-menopausal brain. Sigh!
On that note I’m going to go pull weeds and contemplate how un-hot I really am.

I think what Biel probably meant was that sometimes people only see “hot” when a person is seriously trying to be a good actress. Sheila O’Malley talks about it a lot on her blog in regard to Marilyn Monroe (an example here), who was a fine comedic talent, and who was capable of far more than routine sex kitten or ditzy blonde roles. Nobody took her seriously enough to really give her the freedom to take those chances. She fought and scratched for everything.

American Papist, comes from someone who doesn’t just blog when it comes to info, you don’t need a radio show;)! Humour is a good place to start!
