Gateway Pundit points out that President Obama yesterday equated the Palestinian people to US slaves, South African blacks during apartheid, and East European nations under Soviet control.
So if I’m Israel and I’m starting to count my friends in the international community, I won’t be needing my thumb. Seriously, could Obama make it more clear that he doesn’t much like Israel.
Anyway, Obama told the Palestinians that they must abandon violence because it never helps.
Palestinians must abandon violence. Resistance through violence and killing is wrong and it does not succeed. For centuries, black people in America suffered the lash of the whip as slaves and the humiliation of segregation. But it was not violence that won full and equal rights. It was a peaceful and determined insistence upon the ideals at the center of America’s founding.
Yeah. It was that peaceful stuff and…THE CIVIL WAR! And from what I’ve read the Civil War was bloodier than Saw 4 and all the Evil Dead movies put together.
So let’s hope the Palestinians don’t know their American history. Gee, you’d think that a President who claimed to be so enamored of Lincoln might remember something about that little thing we call the Civil War.

Obama's dumb comment aside, I think we should be reluctant to give Israel the benefit of the doubt.
I used to be the the biggest Israel defender in the world. The more I talk to faithful Catholics who spend time on the ground there, the more I begin to understand how Israel is responsible for devestating oppression of the Palestinian people–both Christian and Muslim. The Holy father seems aware of this, too, as he gave a pretty generous forum for Palestinian Christians to describe how they've been abused by Israel.
I'm certainly not defending the suicide bombers and terrorists…but let's hold off before we totally buy the (Republican) party line on Israel.

I'm not an Obama fan (I was the first to comment on his Muslim rant) but you are so blinded by your hatred of him that you are making yourself look stupid. The civil war did not win blacks equal rights. It ended slavery. Equal rights were codified after the civil rights struggle of the 50's and 60's which came about for the most part through non-violent resistence. So, Obama spoke correctly here, and you are looking more and more like a zealot who's personal hatred is clouding his judgement and will be taken less and less seriously.

Anon, Obama said slavery. The civil rights struggle didn't end slavery. Their freedom was earned with blood.
That's why it was a bad analogy.

Hmm…
You know, you guys must be growing in popularity.
Sure-fire sign of internet presence is trolls. Especially anonymous ones.
Congratulations!

I think it is the obama tag….brings the trolls out pretty quickly.

He said slavery, then SEGREGATION. Then mentioned EQUAL RIGHTS (having to do with segregation) which was won with nonviolence during the civil rights movement, as opposed to FREEDOM FROM SLAVERY (which he did not mention) which was won through violent means via the civil war. Are you saying you don't understand grammatic chronology?
Keep digging. You're only making yourself look worse here.

Umm…
"For centuries, black people in America suffered the lash of the whip as slaves"
to
"not violence that won full and equal rights"
So, slavery => non-violent protest => rights.
Yep, keep digging. You might hit someone who reads the full excerpt.
Jeez.
And for crying out loud, give yourself a handle. Not personal info, just a moniker one can use to respectfully argue their point.

Early in the speech Obama said, "We were founded upon the ideal that all are created equal. And we have shed blood and struggled for centuries to give meaning to those words, within our borders and around the world." One might actually get the impression that shedding blod for the rights of others is possibly a good thing.
Then on encouraging the Palestinians to give up violence he said, "Resistance through violence and killing is wrong and it does not succeed. For centuries, black people in America suffered the lash of the whip as slaves and the humiliation of segregation. But it was not violence that won full and equal rights. It was a peaceful and determined insistence upon the ideals at the center of America's founding."
So while the Civil War did not win them full and equal rights, it did play a big part in their freedom.
And I'm not the biggest history buff out there but I am almost certain America used violence to gain her freedon from England. I think that was the …ummm…Revolutionary War, wasn't it?
🙂

I did not hear nor read the speech (somehow I am not very interested anymore)…. but apparently he admits that this country was founded upon the ideal that all are created equal….. it is obvious what the logical conclusion should be, is it not?
The fact that he does not conclude this claim logically in his speeches (and adheres to the Constitution), and much less in his policies says everything, no?

Since President Obama was trying to steer Muslims and Palestinians in particular towards a peaceful solution, doesn't it seem the least bit logical for him NOT to bring up the Civil War or the Revolutionary War in his speech to them?
I didn't vote for this president and I certainly don't agree with his stance on right to life issues. But some posters here seem to be down right petty here.

Did Obama forget that the biggest sellers of slaves to America were Arab & African Muslims?
June 6, 2009 at 6:03 am
Okay, somebody has to point out that the Civil War was originally about States' Rights, not slavery. The slavery thing was only brought in toward the end of the war as propaganda to drum up interest in a cause the North was beginning to care less and less about.
Yes, at the end of it, the slaves were "free". Of course, they weren't welcome in the South, but the nasty little fact that nobody wants to remember is that they were not welcome in the North, either. Even Lincoln, the "Great Emancipator" said in his memoirs that we should send them all back to Africa!
Hmmm. . . the Palestinians may have more in common with those slaves than one might think. . .

OK, I just want to comment on the fact that the Jewish Americans are getting what they deserve. They overwhelmingly voted for this clown, and now he's not going to support Israel.

Keep on yapping – the more this white christian assclown keeps harping on Obama – the more he looks like the typical conservative racist this facade of a christian blog tries to hide.
P.S. Nobody – I mean, NOBODY outside of the US and Israel wants another white country founded on displacing the existing ethnic populations – even Australia is jumping ship on your guys. Keep on supporting this fascist freeloading nation Israel that ignores every UN resolution and International law there is – they'll just drag you down with them!
