Left for dead. That’s the only accurate way to describe the fate of the baby who survived a botched abortion in Italy only to be abandoned until being discovered by a priest the following day.
The UK Telegraph reports:
A baby boy abandoned by doctors to die after a botched abortion was found alive nearly two days later.
The 22-week infant later died in intensive care at a hospital in the mother’s home town of Rossano in southern Italy.
The mother, pregnant for the first time, had opted for an abortion after prenatal scans suggested that her baby was disabled.
However the infant survived the procedure, carried out on Saturday in the Rossano Calabria hospital, and was left by doctors to die.
He was discovered alive the following day – some 20 hours after the operation – by Father Antonio Martello, the hospital chaplain, who had gone to pray beside his body.
He found that the baby, wrapped in a sheet with his umbilical cord still attached, was moving and breathing.
The priest raised the alarm and doctors immediately arranged for the infant to be taken to a specialist neonatal unit at a neighbouring hospital where he died on Monday morning.
Until our culture decides every life is sacred we will continue spiraling into this hedonistic madness.
The newspaper said that police are investigating it as a homicide as doctors are obligated to try to preserve the life of a child if the child survives the abortion. Can you just for one second ponder the madness of that. Doctors can try every which way to kill the baby but if that same baby comes out of the womb then those same doctors are legally obligated to do everything in their power to save the baby. What inhuman madness reigns in our culture?

Twice in one week the words I want to use to express my heartbreak, are words I would not want to stain someone else's com-box with.
Dear sweet Lord have mercy.

This just brought me to tears. Each aborted baby is as precious as this one.
It is truly madness. I wonder for how much longer Jesus will hold back his hand.

The scariest thing is that – if pressed – the pro-aborts would certainly support infanticide of "undesirables". They just don't have the power or the guts (yet). That would be turning up the heat on us frogs a bit to quickly!
It's our job to spread the good news that it's never too late if you turn to the Lord and that He can give you strength to follow through on that repentence. If you're pregnant and can't see how you'll ever have the baby, He can give you peace and strength to bring it to term and either raise it or provide a blessing to a childless couple. If you've had an abortion, He can make scarlet sins as white as wool.
Father, let those who perform or contemplate or support abortion see it through your eyes. Also, lest they despair and die, let them see themselves through your Mercy. In Jesus' name, amen!

Lord have mercy.

Thank God a priest found the baby! God help us all.

Let us pray for the soul of that blessed child. May we hope the baby was baptised by the holy Priest who has such a selfless prayer life as to sepnd time in prayer with the dead.

For the sake of His sorrowful passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world!

I cried. I just can't… I can't comprehend it.

That wasn't hedonistic behavior. Very bad, yes, but "hedonistic" is not the correct word.

How heartbreaking. Terrible things do continue to happen.
"Brian" is correct, however…and to "Doug Stein," I would caution against making such harmful blanket statements.
Prayers indeed for all the hurting everywhere, especially those children who didn't get to live.

Abortion is hedonistic behavior. Hedonism is a school of ethics which argues that pleasure is the only intrinsic good. Babies, to a hedonist, would be seen as…say…a punishment to be avoided.

Oh Dear. Oh my. This is so terrible, I have no words.
Jesus, Mary, Joseph, forgive us ~ the unforgivable.

May God have mercy on them (and us) all.

This story is terrifying for a number of reasons beyond just the surface. Were the same doctors performing the abortion helping save the child? At the very least, they must have known the other doctors.
But to have an innocent life turn from a "burden" to a tragedy literally because of a heartbeat…

While not trying to be too political, our President is in favor of this sort of thing. See http://www.humanevents.com/article.php?id=18647 (From 12/26/2006)
"In 2002, as an Illinois legislator, Obama voted against the Induced Infant Liability Act, which would have protected babies that survived late-term abortions. That same year a similar federal law, the Born Alive Infant Protection Act, was signed by President Bush. Only 15 members of the U.S. House opposed it, and it passed the Senate unanimously on a voice vote."
Many Americans knew of his position well before his election but voted for him anyway or because of it. Perhaps this is the sort of "Change" they wanted.

Hedonism is pleasure-seeking. Abortion is not pleasure-seeking, is it? As far as I understand, abortion is an act of violence, not pleasure-seeking. Thank you for backing me up, Laura.

I can't speak for all supporters of abortion, or anyone for that matter. However, I also can't exactly see how one could argue with any credibility that the average "abortionist" could take any form of personal enjoyment in his or her work. From the viewpoint that abortion is murder, I think that to claim the act of abortion as hedonistic basically accuses executioners employed by the state as pleasure-seeking in their behavior. Accounting for I suppose a few somewhat disturbing exceptions that I'm sure exist, this simply is just not the case.

These stories frustrate me to no end. My third daughter was born three months early, all of 22.5 oz (640g), the size of some of these babies. I know exactly what was needed to save her, and the same medical treatment could save a lot of other babies. I saw the ultimate bill. I could give a laundry list of things my daughter has overcome…intubation, transfusions (she has 22 scars on her hands alone from IVs…not to mention the ones on her feet and head), infections, surgeries, and so on. I saw how helpless and vulnerable she was, yet how fully human.
I don't understand how any person with feelings can just ignore a baby in need of help. I really don't understand how a doctor, a person who has allegedly dedicated his life to saving others, can ignore a patient.
I'll omit the curse words I want to use to describe the scum who can ignore a baby like this, to just let that little life die, when they know exactly what is needed to give that child the best chance at living, and that it's completely possible.
Monsters.

Laura, it's hedonistic because it's a natural extension of pleasure for pleasure's sake, without ramification…hedonism. I didn't enjoy my daughter's 15 week hospital stay, nor the re-admittance, nor the O2 machine at home, nor the 10+ doctors she had weekly visits with. Those were the experiences I had as a result of my daughters early birth, and they most certainly weren't pleasurable.
