Duuude. Famous novelist and former atheist Anne Rice just broke up with Christ…ON FACEBOOK!
Totally ruuuuude. Uncool. Breaking up via Facebook is just a little bit better than getting broken up with via Tweet. Not much better but I guess a little.
The Deacon’s Bench writes:
The best-selling writer who made headlines with her dramatic conversion (or reversion) and wrote a popular book about her journey back to Catholicism, has changed her mind.
She made the announcement on Facebook:
“I quit being a Christian. I’m out. In the name of Christ, I refuse to be anti-gay. I refuse to be anti-feminist. I refuse to be anti-artificial birth control. I refuse to be anti-Democrat. I refuse to be anti-secular humanism. I refuse to be anti-science. I refuse to be anti-life. In the name of … Christ, I quit Christianity and being Christian. Amen.”
Sheesh! Why doesn’t she just read the National Catholic Reporter, I think a lot of those guys over there would agree with her kind of Christianity.
Actually Rice tried to make up with Christ a little later. She wrote on Facebook:
“I remain committed to Christ as always but not to being ‘Christian’ or to being part of Christianity.”
Wow. Quickest break up like…evah. Kick Jesus to the curb and then when she realized she couldn’t get a date for Sunday she calls the big man back and says it was all a misunderstanding. Again -not cool.
But what a weird statement -she remains committed to Christ but not to being “Christian.” Huh? So she’s committed to Christ as long as Christ agrees with her. Maybe I have to read the National Catholic Reporter more to understand statements like that. I’m not going to though.
The funny thing is that she doesn’t realize that by calling herself a follower of Christ and not following any of the rules of Christianity she just joined the majority of Christians in this country. We’re called sinners, Ms. Rice.

I heard from Catherine, who heard from Monica, who was talking to Francis who stays at Assisi, that Anne was mad that Jesus convinced her to quit the Vampire game, just before it got "hot again."
So she was, like all mad and stuff. So she was like, "Well forget him, I mean, he is cool and all and I like him, I just don't want other people getting hurt by his teachings."
So she decided to FBBU (face book break up) with him. I hear she still wants to hang out with him, but I dont know?
I am going to Tweet Tommy-A and see if he could summa it up for me.

Golly, what's next, Lindsay Lohan becoming a weekend anchorite? Michelle Obama donning sackcloth? Hillary Clinton taking the vow of silence? Nancy Pelosi kneeling in the snow for her sins? Why does this "news" about Anne Rice not surprise me?

I quit being a Christian. I'm out. Amen.
Then by implication, as long as she was Christian, she was anti-gay/anti-feminist/anti-Democrat, etc. As Christian as I'd like to think I am, I could never carry on all this time with all of those hang-ups (with the exception of anti-ABC, though the anti-Democrat thing is coming around). My hat's off to her for carrying the homophobic misogynist bit for so long (and she's female to boot!)
At the risk of sounding UN-Christlike, what a friggin loon!!

Sounds like Ms. Rice just become an Episcopalian. All joking aside, we need to pray for her.

glad I never her read her silly books.

I'd like to be a fly on the wall when she gets to the pearly gates. Hmmm, which part of heaven do you think you might like, since you're picking and choosing here?

(Yawn) Next!

Cold! Better than breaking up on a post-it.

Maybe she's been doing lunch with Pelosi, except Nancy still calls herself a "Christian"
July 30, 2010 at 2:11 am
That's odd – I don't recall Jesus saying "put down your cross and follow me".

Do writers read? Her reasons sound are those of your typical uncatechized Catholic.

"I remain committed to Christ as always but not to being 'Christian' or to being part of Christianity." Umm…how?
July 30, 2010 at 3:39 am
Well, that didn't take long, did it?
July 30, 2010 at 4:49 am
I think some people tried to tell her that it (hanging with Jesus) was going to involve those things. I guess she was just too caught up in wanting to be cool or something to think about what it meant when she "made the commitment."
(seriously, did she not examine these issues while going through RCIA?)
As a hardly perfect Christian myself she has my prayers. Thank you God that your arms are always open.

A crisis of faith? Most people implode. I guess Ms. Rice chose to explode. I don't know her story well enough to paint her as a first class looney (though, if those are her words… ), but too often these days people do the darnedest things just to gain attention, sell books, etc.

Wish I had saved the bizarre email I received from Anne Rice some time ago in response to my email regarding her support of Hillary Clinton (prior to Obama's nomination) and how she squared that with her Catholicism. Not surprising at all.
July 30, 2010 at 3:59 pm
I remain committed to Christ as always but not to being 'Christian' or to being part of Christianity.
Is that sort of like "We can still be friends?"

Maybe she's going Dr. Dawkins' route and is a fan of Jesus without following or believing anything the Bible or Church says about Him, except only the (few) sayings they like.

One cannot but be reminded of the following from "A Man for All Seasons."
"Listen Roper. Two years ago you were a passionate Churchman; now, you're a passionate Lutheran. We must just pray that when your head's finished turning, your face is to the front again."

She didn't have to go to RCIA, she was a cradle Catholic, with deep emotional ties to a Catholic atmosphere and Catholic symbolism.
All she had to do was go to confession.
In her book she admitted she couldn't see it the Church's way about homosexuality, but at that point she was trying to leave room open for possibly coming to see that she might be wrong.
She was engaged in some of the combox discussions about Sister McBride, and was horrified by those of us who said that we couldn't deliberately directly kill an 11 week unborn baby even to save its mother's life. She said it made her ashamed to be Catholic.
You have to admit that this is a rough one to deal with for someone only partially converted.
Pray for her.
