Mop-head Voris obviously doesn't understand the meaning of the word hypocrisy. Why ANYONE who considers himself/herself a good Catholic would attend a Notre Dame game, send them any money, and least of all one of their offspring is mind-boggling. Apparently Mop-head thinks he's a church of one and gets to make up his own rules about who is or isn't a "good" Catholic.
Good find. I'll repost. These guys with degrees – Frs. Jenkins & McBrien, Sr. Keehan know so much just like the devil who may know even more (cfr. angelic knowledge). But information without faith bring disobedience, sin and perdition.
Also, truly intelligent people become humbler the more they know because, they realize how ignorant they were before. Jenkins, Keehan with all their degrees have not really grown. What a waste of donations & ability.
I left a note on his blog that some are concerned about the potential hypocrisy of attending an ND game. I'd be interested in his response. Now, there's a novel concept–got a problem with someone? Ask them about it. 🙂
Early Riser, how does a man compromise his Catholicism by going to a football game of his alma mater?? That, and your comments on his hair (twice) tell us more about you than about Michael. Sorry. I don't buy it.
There is no such thing as a "good Catholic" or a "bad Catholic" — just those who are loyal to the Magisterium and those who are not. Michael Voris falls into the former category; his attendance at a Notre Dame football game does not negate the fact.
What does make him hypocritical imo is that he puts his degree after his name in the video, but his degree is just an ecclesial bachelors degree of Theology. It is not a masters, it is not a licentiate and it is not a doctorate. It is a degree that one does not typically put after their name any more than the B.A. of Philosophy would put "B.A. Phil." after their name. He is as guilty of touting his degrees as the poeple he accuses.
His other points may be true but seem like a waste of time to spend any time on.
He is as guilty of touting his degrees as the poeple he accuses.
No he is not as I mentioned over at Fr. Erik's blog. MV gave an anecdote that strongly suggested that the woman in question was constructing an argument and bringing in her degrees to bolster its validity, which is perfectly fair game to call out in such cases. Like I said, it's anecdotal, so we can't check it out, but frankly we haven't got a good reason to distrust it either. I have yet to see MV give an argument and say or even mildly imply, "I have an S.T.B, therefore I am more right than someone who doesn't."
Maybe he listed it in an attempt to mock the woman who was bragging about her degree in his story? Does he list the degree after his name in all his videos?
Does he list the degree after his name in all his videos?
Yes, and I don't see the problem. Sure, I have a BA in Music and I've never put it after my name. However, if was doing a book or video series on music, I would for informational purposes. If in that book or video I started an argument with someone and suggested that I have a BA and x person doesn't so I win, then there is cause for complaint. From the MV video, he says there was a woman trying to defend the Church teaching on abortion, and it seems that the loud woman has countering with her degrees in classic Church vs. dissenting theologian cant.
I just think in this instance its a little hypocritical because he is talking about degree braggers. And the fact that he puts it in every video is an indirect justification to say I know stuff. But my bigger issue is that most viewing his video do not know what an S.T.B. is and it would not be surprising if many thought it was a more advanced degree than it is. If he wants to put it in his bio on his website whatever, but to break convention to list your degree seems to be saying hey look I have a degree I'm qualified. Frankly I would take him more seriously if he didn't put S.T.B. after his name, but that's just my opinion.
This guy is hypocritical on so many things…so many things. S.T.B., who cares…anybody could purchase that "degree"!! What a joke!! And please, somebody take up a collection to help him replace that hideous hairpiece he wears- it's painful to look at!!
I admit I've always been perplexed by Voris's inclusion of his degree after his name in his segments. Certainly there's a place to list credentials – perhaps on the website, or in credits afterwards. But given that an S.T.B. is not an advanced degree, it seems surprising he would want to mention it so prominently. We're not talking about an S.T.D. or Ph.D. or even an M.A..
But having said that, he's certainly on the money about the elitist credentialism (and theological heterodoxy) of certain progressive lay Catholics (particularly those who have been dominating parish, diocesan and USCCB staff leadership for the last four decades) – especially of the older generation.
I think the guys point is that the woman was using her degree to say she knew everything. He was right to point out that babies being aborted is evil. Also those of you who are making fun of his hair, really?? really? I can't believe I would read something in a post about Catholics making fun of someone's physical appearance.
Trad Tom – that is entirely your opinion and speculation. There have been many saints who were in fact NOT loyal to their contemporary magesterium (i.e. local bishops), yet adhered to the church's eternal teaching on faith and morals. Big difference.
Mop-head has many times spoken out against the US bishops with a blanket "they", totally disregarding those who are actually doing good. This is not loyalty to the magesterium. Condemning the current president and board of Notre Dame on one side of your mouth, then sitting down on your fat tuckus to watch a game and tacitly supporting the SAME president and board is hypocrisy at its finest.
Early Riser,
Do you truly believe that Voris acted hypocritically by attending a Notre Dame game? Are you aware that a fair chunk of the student body gave a glimmer of "Fighting Irish" virtue by conducting their own commencement?
Why should Voris neglect every aspect of his alma mater? Do you think Voris CHOSE the attitudes of the administrators? I suspect not. In fact, I suspect Voris struggled intellectually with them much like I struggled with the attitudes of the administrators–and many faculty–of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Do you then expect me to forget my fonder memories of UN-L or cease being a Cornhuskers fan?
With all due respect, you might as well ask us to cut off a finger or a toe. I finally visited my alma mater's campus again about seven years after graduation. I had dreaded doing it, thinking of all the "fun" I had. Surprise. I enjoyed the trip.
The ignorance (and arrogance) of academia couldn't erase my fond memories; I enjoyed seeing some of my old haunts again.
I suspect Voris chose the administration's views about as much as I chose UN-Ls.
BTW, Voris appears to have demonstrated his own "Irish" grit: He DID call the lady down, didn't he?
As another pointed out, the comments about MV's physical appearance say more about the complainer than MV. It's a hand tip. I'm not aware of many prominent Catholics that the appearance-bashers would approval calling for a total ND boycott.
I just think in this instance its a little hypocritical because he is talking about degree braggers.
And again it isn't so because it's a case of the woman using a degree as a weapon.
And the fact that he puts it in every video is an indirect justification to say I know stuff.
No, people are entitled to know what a person's qualifications are, and some people want to know. Frankly, I didn't even notice the STB until someone with an axe to grind pointed it out.
Early riser (probably a bald man) must get up too early and on the wrong side of the bed. Where is your web site where you speak out in defense of the faith as Voris? He is doing far more good than you with your negative remarks attacking a most unimportant thing (you sound so bitchy and immature).
Hi, First let me say that I do have some degrees too but i never really care because there are so many others that have them, it is a moot point which is the point I think MV was trying to make. Second the STB is, yes, a Bachelors degree but in the pontifical faculty. The requirements for an STB are the equivalent of two masters degrees, one in Philosophy and one in Theology. This is the degree that most order priests have by the time their formation is finished. It takes roughly three to four years after the civil BA degree to achieve. As degrees go its pretty good and much more difficult to achieve than a civil BA which you really can "purchase" off the internet. I have yet to see someone selling the STB.
Just my two cents.

Mr Voris is awesome!
He has helped my wife and I grow immensely in our Faith.
God bless him for all the salutary work that he is doing.
