It is the laity's job to fight for the Truth! That is why we were confirmed, after all. Most especially when our bishops and clergy and religious are not doing it, not teaching it. For over 40 years the laity was too silent and the soul of the world slipped into an ever greater darkness. 50 million abortions in the US which never should have happened had not Catholics been sleeping at the wheel and our shepherds silent as the grave for the most part. The corruption of many religious Orders infiltrated everywhere and Catholic education became a travesty and still is in many places. Orders such as the Jesuits, with their glorious past and charism became suspect and one would deal with them with care and discernment.
We cannot be silent in the face of grave moral evils and if our shepherds are busy compromising, then the rest of us must step up and be counted.
A corner has been turned though, I think. Good shepherds are beign appointed. Brick by brick things are improving. Even the liturgy is slowly being returned to what it ahould have always remained.
"Our times make even the worst previous centuries look like a mere zit on the face of a 16-year-old"
I know we have problems, and pretty serious ones at that, which do demand action. However, I wouldn't exactly place events like the Civil War, the Irish Famine, the French Revolution, the era of slavery, the Hundred Years War, the Black Death, or the Islamic conquests of old in the "mere zit" category. Things could be, and have been, a LOT worse.
I know that there have been dark times in previous centuries, and that the roots of current sins have been in place since the beginning of time. Sacrificing babies to Moloch was probably not a high point in the world's history. However, what scares me (and I say it again) about our current world is exactly the kind of statement above. It could be worse. Really? I guess theoretically it could be worse, but there is a vast silence and acceptance of the darkness in which we live. We didn't live in those eras, so we really have no idea of what it felt like, what it was. The horror of the current days is that it doesn't feel like anything. It feels "normal", and so we (and I use that widely) follow the lemmings off the cliff.
