If this is true, we are even more screwed than I thought.
President Obama said “We don’t have a stronger friend and stronger ally than Nicolas Sarkozy, and the French people.”
I am so depressed.

Oh, And by the way. Can we all agree that making your son’s middle name “Lee” is just a bad idea?

What with the French? Are you Franco-phobic? What is true is that we're allies of the USA: we have reintegrated the NATO, we fight for you in Afghanistan, and our boys die in a war that was started by the Americans (although I recognize it is a necessary war). So why are you depressed when the US president acknowledge that we are strong allies of your country?

Henri……
Maybe the history of the 20th and now 21st Century has something to do with it.
Calling France a "strong" ally of the U.S. is like calling the man sleeping with your wife a "strong" family friend.

Hawaii has snow because of Mauna Kea, the tallest mountain on the islands. No big deal there.

Henri, I think the issue is that saying we have "no stronger ally than France" is a slap in the face to countries like Great Britain that are probably more deserving of such high praise.

I agree I am also depressed by Obama's comment regarding Sarkozy and the French. Maybe it is true that the French at one time were staunch allies, but in the last 20 years this trend has definitely changed. Take for example the second Iraq war. France had all the right not to join in the combat, but what made their stance so deplorable is the fact that they were big players in the "oil for food" scandal that wrecked the credibility of the U.N. France simply choose not to help us because it would affect their standing with Saddam Hussein. France choose oil, at the expense of the thousands of innocent people that Hussein slaughtered. Sounds like a great ally right?

The US doesn't have allies. We have pararistes and assoiates. Even the Brits aren't entirely our friends.
