Apart from being a terrible rendition of the Prayer of St. Francis, it is horribly inappropriate to have a "performance" from the sanctuary. They should have been singing from the choir loft.
I also don't know if you saw the general intercessions, but they were even worse than those at the Edward Kennedy funeral. They were prayers "to" grandpa (because we all know he MUST be in heaven with grandma and Jesus and all the saints) instead of prayers for him. Where are pastors and bishops (since one presided) when these things are being composed? Why didn't someone have the courage to say no to such things? No wonder people mistakenly think Catholic funerals are "Celebrations of Life" instead of a prayer for the souls of the departed.

I'm going to have to make a will on this, but…
When it's my funeral, I'm having it at my Latin Mass Parish. None of this white balloon & make it up as you go along liturgy nonsense.
I want the mass of the ages, with the Dies Irae and a good, scary homily on Purgatory and the need to pray for the living & the dead.
The Mass is not a show, and it's not about ourselves, but about God. How much more true when it marks the terrible moment when we face Him in judgement, as the Dies Irae reminds us.

That's one of the worst things I've ever.

Pathetic!

for some reason- I read the headline as meaning SONNY Bono and wondered if they had some 3-D Computer imaging going on! 🙂
I'm not yet 40- so this was a weird connection to make…maybe because I was listening to Cat Stevens earlier today?

Ummmmmmmmm – to finish: heard

I suppose they couldn't find a clip from MAMA MIA.

Ugh,
Even worse than I imagined. Bono actually mangled a perfectly simple, and awful, arrangement of the "Prayer of St. Francis" penned by Sebastian Temple and sold by OCP as part of their "Breaking Bread" hymnal.
The melody music is offered on their website, linked here.
What an egotist, that Bono. Couldn't even perform it correctly without inserting himself into it.

Like danightman, I found it even worse that I could have imagined. I could only listen to 30 seconds.

That's show biz, baby!
January 23, 2011 at 4:36 am
Good grief! Bono's really lost it! And why was he changing words? It's a Catholic Church… it's OK to sing Catholic Words!
Patrick, I will never forgive you for posting this. I'll never be able to listen to Joshua Tree again without hearing THIS. If only the pain could be excised from my mind……

Blech!

Why. Why do I have ears.

Auchtung Bishop!

clearly a lone voice here, but I'm not that bothered. This basic melody is sung all over the US- its presence is hardly surprising. Nor is it surprising when a singer puts his own style on something. It's not the best, but I don't see any evidence of grandstanding or trying to do anything but sing a song at a man's funeral. Not my first pick, but it does talk about peace for the guy who founded the Peace Corps. From what I can see, they tried to sing a prayer with feeling and honesty. It's a big leap from not liking their interpretation and the musical arrangement to judge these men's character.

Painful. So Painful.
Sounded like Uncle Teddy snoring off a late night out in his scotch-drenched boxer shorts.
January 23, 2011 at 12:22 pm
Absolutely nauseating. They should of has Sarah Palin sing!
January 23, 2011 at 12:49 pm
Wow! I could not have imagined such a well-known singer doing such a terrible job.
I have heard better settings of that prayer, too.
January 23, 2011 at 12:52 pm
Oops! I listened to the rest of it. I have heard that setting before. Bono did it terribly.

"I see dead people…" …getting up and leaving.
