What a wonderful tribute to a wonderful man.
A wondeful faithful servant(daily Mass attending)
goes before us and even when Alzheimers stripped the man of his memory -he could recall every word
to the Hail Mary. I am sorry that there are so many hateful comments on here! What a Prideful
Group of Commentors. Save your anger for something worthwhile. Thanks for posting and R.I.P. Faithful Shriver.

Re: Anon,
I have to agree that Sargent Shriver was a decent man, one of the few in politics in our time.
But I also have to say, and have, that he deserved a better funeral liturgy than the one shown on Youtube.
A Requiem Mass is supposed to be our prayers of adoration to God, reparation for our sins along with our prayers for God's mercy on him & us, and supplication to him for the repose and eternal memory of the departed. It is the last and only thing the Church can do for him now that he stands before God.
My comments about Bono's "performance" express my outrage that, given what this was supposed to be, it was exactly and only that. A performance (and IMO not even a good one), and not a liturgical song, and in the context not in keeping with the actions of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass for the repose of Sargent Shriver.
If you misunderstand or have taken my comments in any other way, you've misunderstood. Finally, allow me to say R.I.P. Mr Shriver.

Anonymous, I think the complaints are about the music, not the person being mourned.

Anonymous,
Our anger IS about something worthwhile. The liturgy of the Catholic Church has been debased by many. Our upset is not about Mr Shriver (good man, R.I.P) it is about turning the liturgy into something it is not. The funeral liturgy is not a tribute to the deceased.

The song is terribly over-rated. Bono simply made it worse with his personal imprint.

The entire Kennedy family should just stop labeling themselves as Catholics. They believe NOTHING the Church teaches and have been the biggest proponents of abortion in human history. The bishop of the diocese and the pastor of the parish ought to be ashamed for letting abuses such as letting non Catholic rock stars "perform" during the Mass AND a former president who has caused scandal beyond belief give a eulogy which isn't even permitted any way. And I bet they ALL went to holy communion and is was given to all the abortionist and the protestants just because the parish priest couldn't care less and is blinded by celebrity.

Sadly, the last comment is true. And the music is badly done. Just badly done – that doesn't even need an explanation.

Kennedy funeral = sloppy Mass in public. Hopefully the next one will be private.

Sargent Shriver was the first Catholic to serve on a pro-abortion presidential ticket (after 6 other guys refused and McGovern had 0 chance of being elected) — actually the first time in history that a presidential candidate publicized he was pro-abortion [McGovern was known as the candidate of "amnesty, acid and abortion"; 1972 election was first time majority of Catholics voted Republican].
If the first family (Kennedy) of Catholicism was going to go along w/abortion, it is no wonder that on January 22 1973 (right after the November 1972 election where SS ran – if he'd been elected he would have been sworn in January 20, 1973, if the Catholics don't care, who does?) Roe vs Wade decision was announced.
Writing a letter to the NYTimes in 1992, after all hopes for Teddy being president are gone, is not putting God first, but putting God last. Catholics like Sargent and Eunice Shriver are why there are 53 million dead babies in the U.S. today and why 3,000 are still dying daily.
On the 38th anniversary of Roe vs. Wade, Bono could have made a statement: "sing this with me: This is 40". Hopefully we will not have to sing it that long: Killing babies is wrong!
Note the involvement of the 1st Catholic family of Chicago:

"Bono's personal imprint" is another term for "Bono's inability to sing." And that guitar player? Geez, I played better than that in high school. My funeral plans will be spelled out in excruciating detail, with a special note to the priest, that if he screws up, I will rise from the grave and hound his @$$ into the grave.
But hey, that's just me.
