Chris Christie, the first pro-life Governor of New Jersey. That’s a pretty awesome moniker for a guy who used to be publicly pro-choice.
But in many ways Christie in power has been very conservative. His very public battle with the teacher’s unions have become legendary. He’s a YouTube hit. Some talk radio hosts have even started daydreaming and doodling in their spiral notebooks “President Chris Christie.” Word also has it that the GOP initially asked Christie to deliver a response to the State of the Union (which he declined.)
In short, his star is on the rise.
Pro-lifers have watched Christie carefully. And there have been some good things. Christie’s battle to defund Planned Parenthood has been epic. And now there’s talk of doing the same thing on the federal level. And yesterday Christie spoke publicly at a pro-life rally. Check out what he said:
Weasel Zippers reports:
– “Every life is precious and a gift from God,” said Christie, coatless on the coldest day so far this winter, before hundreds of children and adults.
The Republican governor, who once was an abortion-rights advocate – or as he told the crowd, “not always on your side” – said his views changed after he heard the heartbeat of his daughter, Sara, now 14, three months into his wife’s pregnancy.
“It was at that moment that it became clear to me that that’s a life that deserves protection,” Christie said. “This is an issue whose time has come.”
So here’s the question -do you trust Chris Christie? Do you trust Chris Christie to be pro-life? Should his star continue to rise, would you feel comfortable saying the words “President Christie?”
Keep in mind no group has been lied to more than pro-lifers. We’ve been burned pretty much by everyone who could burn us. So pardon us if we’re a bit relucatant to buy into any pol that promises to be pro-life.
There’s a lot to like about Governor Christie but I’m honestly not sure yet. You?

He'd be a godsend compared to those who have caused the curtain of evil to descend upon the nation's capital.

When the snows came, Christie did a Mayor Nagin thing and went elsewhere for a holiday.
Not to be trusted.

I'm with Adrienne, who said "trust but verify."
Also we need to remember a few things:
a) Politics is the art of the possible, not the way to achieve perfection. We're never going to get entirely what we want out of an earthly government (reread what Samuel said to the Israelites, for a little reminder of what God thinks of earthly politics). And in a democracy, like it or not, you have to be realistic and settle for what you can get.
b) No politician, or virtually no politician, is trustworthy. They're politicians. 'Nuff said.
c) Ronald Reagan is dead. Sadly. And the mold is broken.
So…it doesn't really matter whether I trust Chris Christie or not. We need to decide if he's the best we can do, and if he is, then support him.
However, I think I'll go for Newt Gingrich first. Experience, a track record of achievement, and good conservative principles. Yes, I know–personal baggage. But he says he's repented of that, and it looks like he might be telling the truth. We of all people should recognize the possibility of repentance and conversion.

Never, EVER trust a Fat Man. There's a reason why they are FAT!
Fat people always lie! It's inherent.

I have no skepticism about Governor Christie pro-life status. I pray to God to bless Governor Christie for the spirit he shows and the convictions he stands for. He should be appreciated and not doubt.

I live in NJ – so far everything is hype. He is fighting the unions, but nothing has been done yet. It's more wishful thinking by talk radio. Even with defunding PP, he said it was for budgetary reasons, not moral or theological. And he's broken several campaign promises already. I'm holding him at arm's length and praying for him – that's all I'm prepared to do at this time.

Blackrep, do you believe President Bush is pro-life? I do. Yet his wife (and mother) are pro-choice. I'm with you on Romney though. Do.not.trust.him.

Christie is claiming to be pro-life in NJ. Let's think this through. NJ has only a few conservative areas. Consider Rep. E Scott Garrett, out of Sussex Cty. He ran against pro-choice Marge Roukema three times in the primaries in a relatively conservative district, but Roukema carried the more populous (and thus more liberal) areas, and won. Garrett was only elected after Roukema retired.
Being a pro-life governor in NJ is more of a liability than an asset. To publically say he's pro-life isn't just election talk and bluster. Unless he's a really dumb politician.

Craig-You are talking to the wrong audience with that comment!
I believe, and I think most commenters her do as well, that the programs you say were cut were very bad programs, giving young people encouragement to experiment with sex, which always results in pregnancies because young people are both less than consistently responsible and very fertile. Planned Parenthood style sex education always leads to more pregnancies and to more abortions….and isn't that how they make their money? Yep!
Not to mention that the behavior they encourage is terrible for the hearts and souls of young people, making them less likely to marry and to marry well and permanently, and also endangering their immortal souls.
We'd like to seem them completely defunded by every state and by the federal government. In fact, we'd like to see them disappear from the face of the earth! But at least, we don't want our money going to support them!

Susan,
Helen is a troll. I think she is a man. Seriously.
And Craig's comments on abortion are always on that line.
