Six years ago yesterday, little Fr. Dickie McBrien, the prognosticator of prognosticators, opined to the WaPo that a certain German Cardinal had zero chance of becoming Pope.
“I think this homily shows he [Cardinal Ratzinger] realizes he’s not going to be elected. He’s too much of a polarizing figure,” said the Rev. Richard P. McBrien, University of Notre Dame theologian. “If he were elected, thousands upon thousands of Catholics in Europe and the United States would roll their eyes and retreat to the margins of the church.”
Then six years ago today, this happened…Habemus Papam Punk.

I've looked all over. If anyone can find it I'd love to see it. I remember reading about it in Fr. Neuhaus' book but I don't remember seeing it.

Can we get him to say that Cardinal Burke will never be Pope? Just a thought. Kit

The sentiment in St Peter's Square that day certainly wasn't that of the papam punk…and what a day that was! http://nunspeak.wordpress.com/2011/04/19/habemus-papam-what-a-day-that-was/

Strange I didn't catch any eye rolling among the thousands in that video…

Was this McBrien's way of telling his followers to throw their change down into the collection basket, finish up and head on out if such and such were to happen? I guess this was the schism moment…?
