In a radio interview earlier in the week I was asked what is needed to get Catholic politicians to stop supporting gay marriage. My answer was short and simple. The Bishops need to get serious. Catholic politicians have no fear of voting against the teaching of the Church on very grave matters because other that some occasional Episcopal tut-tutting, nothing ever happens to them.
The Bishops could not be that serious about stopping gay marriage or else they would do something serious about it. And by serious I mean one thing. Let me explain.
Well in advance of any vote on gay marriage, such as we just had in NY, Bishops need to …

Catholics are entitled to vote their conscience. If one candidate is pro-life and pro-gay marriage (although an unlikely scenario), and the other candidaate is pro-abortion and anti-gay-marriage (a position similar to some communist regimes), Catholics are free to exercise their right to vote as they see what is best. If the bishops just teach what they're supposed to teach and teach it like they believe it themselves, all the other things will fall into place as they should.

Excommunication would have the singular benefit of preventing (liberal) politicians from continuing to identify themselves catholic while promoting anti-Christian views. They would be forced to publicly reveal themselves as wolves in sheep's clothing.

A Bishop's job doesn't get any easier than this fact. Catholic politicians who don't follow the teachings of the Church EXCOMMUNICATE THEMSELVES. All Bishops are expected to do is follow the same teachings.
Prayers going out to the Bishops for fortitude…

I think that the church itself must take serious actions. Cardinals should be re-called to Rome and made to sign a statement of fidelity to the Catholic Church accepting the Church's teachings on all issues of faith and morality. They must go back to their dioceses and have all their bishops sign the same paper. All those Cardinals and Bishops who refuse should be dismissed immediately. Enough is enough. Because of them, we have lost the gay marriage law and millions of souls have lost salvation. The fish stinks from the head down. Get rid of em!

Nothing will happen and the world will go on as the Church continuous on its "ecumenical" retreat.
As far as see it the Bishops of Rochester and Albany are very much of the mind that they "are" doing their jobs. If anything they prob think they are doing an excellent job, this is after all the "spirit" of openness that they believe the Second Vatican was trying to usher. They are simply being faithful to the unwritten mandates of the council. Or as they would put it bringing the Church out of the "dark ages."
