This prayer seems a tad unserious and ridiculous… unless the dude was in big trouble with his wife for something.

It was a reference to the NASCAR comedy Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby.

At least he is thankful?
July 25, 2011 at 7:40 pm
I think this falls under the rambling prayers about which Jesus warned.
July 25, 2011 at 7:54 pm
Almost as bad as when a priest innovates at Mass.
July 25, 2011 at 7:55 pm
I wonder how much his sponsors paid him.
July 25, 2011 at 8:12 pm
Yeah, I haven't even seen that movie, but I got the reference… 😛

Yeah, I disagree with you on this one, I found it light-hearted, and am one who prays before and during sporting events for my team. I am one who when at Church, praying, speak like if I was talking to a buddy, always with reverence. I didn't see anything objectionable, but then again it takes a lot,and I do mean a lot, to offend me. BTW, can you give us an update on the Facebook situation. I know I am not the only one who has had trouble sharing your stuff over there.
July 25, 2011 at 8:54 pm
Wow. I bet a lot of priests would love to thank God for their hot wives.

Oh, Please….take it as it is, a funny, maybe a bit off the tracks but well intentioned prayer. Why do we always have to be so serious? If the Good Lord wanted to be serious all the time, He would have never given us a sense of humor. The preacher did not in any way sinned or commited a serious transgration, after all he was at Nascar, is he supposed to be all serious at Nascar????? give me a break.
July 25, 2011 at 11:47 pm
Who is being too serious here? I mean, have you read this site?
July 26, 2011 at 12:01 am
Was he speaking in tongues when he said, "Boogety, Boogety, Boogety,"?
July 26, 2011 at 1:07 am
"Boogity, boogity, boogity! Let's go racing, boys!" is Darrell Waltrip's tag for starting a race when he's announcing. You can also here it in Brad Paisley's "Old Alabama" video and in the movie Cars.

Matthew, I think people are using the word 'serious' because it is used by you in the original post, you called the prayer " a tad unserious and ridiculous ". I for one enjoyed it, but hey that's me.
July 26, 2011 at 12:59 pm
I don't know if this will be a double post or not. I'm really not liking smart phones. I guess I am the too serious kind but "hot" reflects ones own personal lust and seeing someone as an object to fulfill ones own desires rather than seeing them as the image and likeness of God.

@ Michael H.
Dude. He means she's pretty eh? Different language same meaning. So what? Now we are not allowed to notice that our wives are also HOT?! oh brother. I sure notice mine. Perfectly fine to be attracted to my own wife and to notice her beauty. Doesn't mean that I objectify her, but it happens to be one aspect of her person-hood that I appreciate. He could have said, "compassionate wife" or "patient wife" (or blind wife) whatever. But maybe she's not very nice, or very patient, but is at least good lookin'. Who knows?
At least he thanked God for her publicly. I think it was GREAT!
You are probably an F-1 fan or drive a Prius? (OK I am kidding – don't attack me please I am faint of heart.)
July 26, 2011 at 3:55 pm
john boy, sorry to disagree. You may not use the word that way but the world does. I do like F1 but prefer Indy Car and sprint cars.
July 26, 2011 at 4:20 pm
HA! I KNEW IT!
Um, yes I may. I choose not to, but I may. I wouldn't because it would be too easy for someone else to misunderstand what I meant by that. I would like to think that the pastor does NOT mean that he objectifies his own wife when he says that.
Then again. I haven't seen his wife. (OK kidding again!)
You are right "the world" usually means something else, BUT, when I am among my dear Christian brothers and they make similar comments (as I have heard) I know they are just "stealing" the language of "the world" and using it with their own meaning attached. And I get what they mean by what they say. (Look, it is just another way of saying beautiful whether you like it or not, "I am blessed to have a wife who's kind and loving, good, and hot too!" Just another way of speaking, and no, there is nothing wrong with that speech only in how it is used.
So, thankfully, there are no "word police" out there. That would be dreadful. God will judge us not just by what we say, but by what we mean when we say it, yes? I think so anyway. I hope so, otherwise I am…well I won't say it. HA!
P.S. I prefer F-1 and Indy as well. Not so much the sprint. Too bad there is no F-1 in the US. I'd like to see a cheaper version, say Indy cars and on public roads with the twisties, like an Indy Grand Prix. Imagine?
July 26, 2011 at 6:00 pm
Look ma, a lame-o, commercialized religious utterance designed to draw attention to the utterer. Hey, wait — that's Ignatius the celeb youth pastor all grown up!
July 26, 2011 at 8:52 pm
So I guess if she wasn't "hot" he wouldn't be thanking God for her?
EPIC FAIL
July 26, 2011 at 9:45 pm
@Denita: I guess I should clarify, that, overall, the whole thing did strike me as pretty ridiculous. Not my way of prayer. But I just have no problem with thanking God for one's wife being good looking. What if he said, "Thank you, God for my beautiful (charming, whatever) wife." No one would be hyperventilating over it. It is because he used the word "hot". I just happen to have no problem with the language. (I speak a portion of nearly 11 languages and you do learn to see through the language itself and get to the person's heart in order to understand them.)
Your "guess" that he would ONLY thank God for her "hotness" makes no sense. Just because you sing a song and I tell you, "Great voice!" doesn't mean that I don't also think you are a kind person or a looser, or pretty, or annoying, etc. Non sequitur.
Lastly: He was QUOTING (for sake of being humorous and, as he admitted today, to be memorable so as to draw attention to himself and encourage others to be grateful to God and to give Him thanks) the line from Talledega Nights wherein Ricky Bobby says the same thing.
Anyway – I've no issue with "hot wife". And I am, btw, very grateful to God that my wife is "hot". Gorgeous, whatever. I look at her and I think: Wow! God's most perfect creation was… woman. Image and likeness of God. (Otherwise a man may have been the Ark of the New Covenant, instead of Mary.) Nope, man is just… blessed to have women around. (All of em, btw) In the beauty of my wife, I see an (indistinct) reflection of… the perfection of God!! WOW! That we, who are so worthless and wretched should have such attributes ascribed to us in ANY way, stuns me to pondering the infinite awesomeness of the Face of God!
And, if I didn't know that people would take it the wrong way, I would GET DOWN ON MY KNEES in public and SHOUT it from the mountain tops in thanksgiving – along with a LOOOONG list of her more important attributes!) (So – maybe he didn't have time to get into all that. 🙂
As for the rest of it. I admit, it does come across as dumb. And borderline sacrilegious. But, then again, he may have been sincere. So I am NOT judging his soul or his intention. Maybe he really and truly IS grateful for Goodyear Tire. Why shouldn't he be? They do make good tires and allow them to have their race. His language and manner are foreign to most of us, but that should not be a reason to point and shout "SINNER!"
Too many people "here" (Catholic Blogosphere now there's a word that some might find offensive) are too quick to find fault and judge. God's mercy is INFINITE. We, however, find it very easy to think ourselves better than thou. Happens a lot on the Internet.
(Not picking on you, btw! Generalizing. Hope I did not seem to.)
