Well, well, well. It seems that Matthew has rattled some cages with his thoughtful commentary on Notre Dame Football Coach Brian Kelly’s sideline behavior.
There has been quite a few articles written in the media about Kelly’s behavior and Matthew’s commentary on it and I expect that there will be a few more before all is said and done.
But one of the more interesting things to come of this is that coach Brian Kelly was asked about it during his press conference on next week’s Michigan game.
At first, in my estimation, coach Kelly gets a little defensive on the topic but then settles down and gives a reasonable answer. Video here. (Question is at the 16:40 mark)
Question: Coach, I am curious, there is some criticism about your behavior–your demeanor on the sidelines, I wonder if you felt like that’s warranted and do you plan on making…
Kelly: Did I hit someboody, did I strike somebody is that what your referring to? I am asking specifically what you are referring to?
Question: Just some articles about language and about your anger and yelling at kids on the sideline.
Kelly: Oh. Yeah. You know I think I was extremely frustrated with the game and you know…What I have to recognize is that I am on TV all the time and do a better job of understanding of when that camera is on me. It seems like that camera is on me more than I am used to. So I will have to do a better job of controlling my emotions.
He is right that he needs to do a better job of controlling his emotions since the camera is on him. However, the question remains about whether this is proper behavior, cameras or no cameras. But I would settle for my kids not seeing it for starters.
All that said, I find it way cool that the Notre Dame Coach had to respond to Matthew’s criticism. My late father and brother, the two biggest ND fans of all time, would be laughing themselves silly.

Good lesson Kelly is teaching his players – do whatever you want as long as you don't get caught on camera. After he gets canned, maybe he could get a job at the police academy.

And then he could arrest pro-life priests for quietly praying on the Notre Dame campus — off-camera, of course.

ND is a joke as a Catholic institution… my boy plays on a high school team with Christian coaches who know they are roll models to every single person on the field… the difference is that these non-Catholic men have expunged this behavior from there day to day lives so that when they are under pressure they don't make fools of themselves, the program or more importantly Christianity.

Camera, camera. God is watching. What criminals of all stripes never learned: God is watching. From Obama to the nastiest abuser: God is watching. Every sinner: God is watching. To every atheist: God is watching. Oh, and did I tell you that God is watching. Now, you have no excuse for not knowing: God is watching.

Coach Kelly is teaching his players about the Cardinal Virtue of Prudence.
If a camera is there, cut back on the cursing.
One must act like a Christian if there is a camera on you.

ND is not Catholic anymore. I could care less if they win or lose. Of course I prefer they lose.

Anonymous, Do you mean you COULDN'T care less? If you COULD care less, it means you do care to some degree.
Doug Pearson, do you mean ROLE models, or are the coaches a piece of bread (roll models)?

So, I'm watching Mike & Mike this morning on ESPN2 – and what do they talk about but Matthew's Brian Kelly article.
Man, Matt, when you've got Greenie and Golic talking about something you've written you've made it. (I'm being half-serious here.)
Anyway, Golic dismissed the article, of course.
