This is heavy.
October 26th was the day Marty McFly went back in time. So I’m a day late but this is still pretty cool. As you might recall Marty rocked the Hoverboard when he went into the future. Well, here’s some scientists somewhere attempting to create a hoverboard and it looks like they’re getting somewhere.
No word yet when they’ll be making it in pink with racing stripes.

Personally, I’m going to be so ticked because by the time they get these things right I’m gonna’ be too old to use them. Never mind when we’re ever gonna’ get the jetpacks.

nice vid! but Marty's is clearly powered by a pink cassette… if you look at the middle of his "futuristic" Hover Board, I bet if he & the folks in the video used an 8 Track, it would fly!! 😉

The PAV Springtail Exoskeleton Flying Vehicle is a jetpack, although it's a bit bulkier than the fictional examples. It's still a jetpack, and a respectable one at that.
And the Martin Jetpack was invented in the 70s. It's not a great jetpack—it's not very fast, and it doesn't hold much fuel—but it's still a jetpack.
Thing is, they're so dangerous, nobody in their right mind would ever use them—the only application I can think of, even for the former, is as a substitute for parachutes for special forces soldiers—though parachutes have the advantage of being silent and cold, which the Springtail is not.
It's sorta like flying cars: they're never gonna be that widespread, people would have to clear pulling out of the driveway with a control tower, and just imagine the extra manpower all those control towers would need. On the other hand, though, as the SF writer John C. Wright has pointed out, "private helicopters". How, exactly, are those not flying limos?
