The concept of "separation of Church and State" is to protect the Church from attempts of the State to control it in any way, or to otherwise interfere with the individual's inalienable right to freedom of religion and conscience – essential to the common good. The HHS mandate, inter alia, prevents Catholics (individually and corporately) from behaving in accordance with the fundamental tenets of their faith. The mandate also attacks the rights of non-Catholics who accept the Natural Law with regard to non-interference with conception and fertility, or killing human beings while embryos.

I love how the reporter made "abortion rights" equal to religious freedoms. It really is a religion to some of these people isn't it?
I think it was a decent argument that made the right point except that an administration pulling funding from a hospital that performs abortions is legitimate and doesn't actually stomp on anybody's rights.

Patrick, you touch on a point somewhat lost in this new assault on religious freedom: This is not just denying the Church and its subsidiary components from free exercise of religion, but also individuals. If I am a Catholic employer in a secular business, do I not have a First Amendment right anymore?
Unfortunately, most of the bishops have dispensed with their congregations' rights in an attempt to gain an unsuitably narrow religious exemption for themselves.

Oh, and I love how the not-so-Rev Al thinks that a prospective employee must be given free abortion and contraceptive services lest there be a violation of the concept of the separation of Church and state. Nobody seemed to point out to him that if the state had not interjected itself, there would have been no conflict as the Church is only engaging in an act of commerce with a person.

Thank you Maurisa, I have been trying to point out the secular employer's rights to people as well. It's getting lost, but is an essential part of this issue as well.
My Chocolate Heart, I was surprised this was MSNBC, too. Of course, even a broken clock is right twice a day 😉

I keep hearing "if the Church is going to get money from the FedGov", but so far, I hear no one commenting on the meaning of that. Presumably, they are speaking of Medicare and Medicaid. It's not so much that she Church seeks that money, as it is that no hospital can properly serve the community if it rejects those pervasive programs.
