Three of the dumbest paragraphs ever written in the New York Times and that is saying something.
So, Pope Benedict, all I can say is: You are crazy to mess with nuns.
The Vatican issued a stinging reprimand of American nuns this month and ordered a bishop to oversee a makeover of the organization that represents 80 percent of them. In effect, the Vatican accused the nuns of worrying too much about the poor and not enough about abortion and gay marriage.
What Bible did that come from? Jesus in the Gospels repeatedly talks about poverty and social justice, yet never explicitly mentions either abortion or homosexuality. If you look at who has more closely emulated Jesus’s life, Pope Benedict or your average nun, it’s the nun hands down.
Now, everyone here knows I heart the nuns. Nashville style and all. But LCWR nuns not so much. So Nicky would have us believe that a bunch of Reiki practicing, yoga meditating, Ellen Degeneres watching, ugly pant suits or pants with elastic waistbands wearing social workers who encourage opposition to the most fundamental teachings about faith and morality are all about the Jesus, but Pope Benedict is not.
But don’t worry, Nicky has got it all under control. They rockin’ the house with some petitions and stuff. Gonna show dat Pontiff who really the boss and stuff. The Pope will never be able to stand up to some petitions. We are sooo doomed.
Dipstick.

Patrick, you go to far when you implicate pants-with-elastic-waistbands by association!
Other than that, bravo. 😉

Love the Nashville nuns. Want to go to the Motherhouse soon.

I don't remember Jesus explicitly mentioning "social justice" either…. hmm…. and at one point he said, "The poor you will always have with you." That mention of poverty might not be what they have in mind.

The Vatican need not lift a finger. Progressive orders implode from within when normal, competent women are frightened away by neo-pagan nonsense and dissent. They picture their lives trapped in an endless lesbian Gestalt group where they're at at the bottom of the food chain, changing everyone's Depends. That's the tenth circle of hell right there.

Great post, but . . . one "f" in Kristof. C'mon, guys, don't keep proving the old adage, "Blogging means never having to edit."

The Church's primary function is and should be the salvation of souls, not the pursuit of social justice. Few make this point more clearly than Servant of God, Fulton J. Sheen:
"[When Satan tempted Jesus in the desert] our Lord was not denying that man must be fed, or that social justice must be preached, but He was asserting that these things are not first. He was, in effect, saying to Satan, “You tempt me to a religion which would relieve want; you want Me to be baker instead of a Savior; to be a social reformer, instead of a Redeemer. You are tempting Me away from My Cross, suggesting that I be a cheap leader of people, feeding their bellies instead of their souls…Be gone Satan! I am not just a social worker who has never been hungry Himself, but one who says “I reject any plan which promises to make men richer, without making them holier’."

Abortion and homosexual behavior: "Whoever would scandalize one of these little ones, it would be better if he put a millstone around his neck and drowned himself in the botton of the river." Loosely quoting Jesus. The Vicar of Christ has an obligation to correct the nuns. If Nicholas Kristoff believes he can do a better job, what is he waiting for? a run on millstones?

An English newspaper (The Independent) covered the LCWR business but accompanied the article with a picture of the Franciscan Sisters of the Renewal! When they want an iconic image of real nuns (who definitely are not to be messed with) they reach for the faithful kind…

Kristof was kidding, right??

"Three of the dumbest paragraphs ever written in the New York Times and that is saying something."
The title of the article "We Are All Nuns" is just a bit dumb as well.

In the Vatican document the word "poor" only appears once and this is in a context where the Vatican recognizes and appreciates everything the nuns did and do for the poor. I am well aware of the fact that the mainstream-media like to twist the facts and distort the truth whenever they get a chance to bash the pope or the church, but this is already the third time I have read the "worry too much about the poor"-crap. Why isn't anybody out there who quotes the Vatican document and shuts these freaks up?

I was home in PA over Christmas and saw the Erie news. It seemed there was a shooting and the locals were praying at the home of the victim. I looked up and saw what appeared to be an aging masculine woman “smudging” the house with a burning stick of sage. I thought “Wiccans in Erie?” then the newscaster’s voiceover proclaimed that the prayers were lead by the Benedictine Sister’s. Please Dear Lord delivers us from Joan Chittister and her ilk!!!!!!!!!!!

Where did you find a NYT? Aren't they extinct?

I just lol'd so hard the dogs looked at me funny. It's just like the modern media to turn truth into lies…it isn't bad enough that they've condemned the entire religion for the pompous attitudes of a few (and there are quite a few pompous, holier-than-thou priests), now they're condemning traditional Catholics for wanting traditional nuns. Mother Mary, pray for us that we may be delivered from the sacrilegious "holy people"!
