This is pretty amazing. I wouldn’t have guessed this if you’d given me a million years and word jumbled the Catholic’s name for me.
Name the Catholic who said this:
“We believe that Social Security legislation, now billed as a great victory for the poor and for the worker, is a great defeat for Christianity. It is an acceptance of the idea of force and compulsion.”
Feel free to guess in the combox or just click on over to Badger Catholic for the answer. Mind you, the answer he gives up top isn’t the real answer. You’ve got to read on.

That blew my mind.
And then the part about the Catholic bishops attacking Paul Ryan turned my joy to ashes. Bleh.

Given the time period when Social Security was begun, I'm going to guess it's Dorothy Day, perhaps one of the most misunderstood holy woman (by the right and the left) in recent Catholic history.

Charity is a religious response to the call from God. Charity without consent is extortion. If the money the government took went for the poor or at least what the government said it was for, I would be surprized. I would be happy to not have to pay for Pelosi's new jet plane. Obamacare's 59 new czars. The Muslims are exempt from Obamcare but Catholics are not. Why not?

The more I learn about the real Dorothy Day, not the politicized cartoon, the more I like her.

Having been a communist, Dorothy Day was uniquely able to see Social Security for what it is.

A corollary to this is the claim that SS caused the breakdown of the family- no more extended family joined in the care of (great) grandma and grandpa.
Why bother when government funded nursing homes can do it for you?
