I feel like sometimes we end up reporting lots of bad news. So here’s some good news.
Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer has signed a bill that will cut off public funding for organizations that perform abortions.
“This is a common sense law that tightens existing state regulations and closes loopholes in order to ensure that taxpayer dollars are not used to fund abortions, whether directly or indirectly,” Brewer said in a statement. “By signing this measure into law, I stand with the majority of Americans who oppose the use of taxpayer funds for abortion.”
That’s great news. And then I just read that Utah’s governor has enacted a 72 hour waiting period for abortion.
So for all those folks who say there’s no difference between the two parties, there is.
Right now, these are minor victories if you look at the scale of abortion nationwide. But they’re victories nonetheless. And defunding Planned Parenthood is major. Now we just have to ensure some dopey judge doesn’t declare it illegal to defund Big Abortion.

The problem with a judge declaring it illegal to defund abortion is that he is prejudiced, already biased toward Big Abortion and has a conflict of interest, a vested interest against pro-lifers. This is the civil rights argument used by every evil since Adam and Eve.

You will never convince Mark Shea that there's any difference between the two parties!

But, you know, sometimes he's right. The GOP has a wealth of good things to offer America but — time and again — they refuse to do what is *actually* beneficial and genuinely morally right because they're either afraid of being portrayed as the big, fat meanings by the left and the media (but I repeat myself) or because they, too, fall prey to the lust of power rather than sound, just leadership.
Do I dislike Democrat politics? Absolutely. I think economically and socially it's disastrous. But there are times when I'm extremely frustrated with the GOP, too. Especially when they do things like, oh, nominate Mitt Romney because it's his "turn" rather than run a decent candidate who is more conservative.

Amy,
Good comment, but when specifically talking about *abortion* policies, to say there's no difference is ridiculous. You and Steve and Matthew see the 90% good work the GOP does for Pro Life vs. the (about 3%) done by the Dems and say "There's a difference!" Mark says "Neither does 100% so they're EXACTLY THE SAME!" Not reasonable, even if accurate.

I agree about abortion policies. However, I do (and while I don't want to put words in Mark's mouth, I think he feels the same) that there are some in the GOP that see the pro-life movement, Christians, etc. as useful idiots who they'll say anything to in order to get us to vote for them, and then forget us the moment they're in office.
I'd be extremely happy to see politicians who say, "I'm going to do X while I'm in office" and then actually, you know, DO IT. Regardless of whining from the left/media, etc. Do what's right for the sake of doing what's right.
Also, I have to agree that *some* Republican's view on torture is just as abhorrent as abortion, as both are an affront to the basic dignity of human life.
