This is the weirdest story of the day:
A Colorado man who was admitted to the hospital for a kidney stone received surprising news when the nurse came back with test results revealing he was actually a woman.
Denver photographer Steve Crecelius said he’s felt a little different all his life.
“When I was about 6 years old, I started having these feminine feelings, but that was in the ’60s. Wearing my mom’s makeup, I thought I looked pretty,” Crecelius told ABC News.
So when he went to the emergency room five years ago, he wasn’t too shocked when the nurse told him she found traits of both genders in his ultrasound results.
He was intersex, meaning he had both male genitalia and internal female sex organs.
“The nurse is reading the ultrasound and says, ‘Huh, this says you’re a female,’ Crecelius said. “It was very liberating. I had spent so much energy after the age of 13 constantly evaluating how people looked at me and acted towards me.”
Steve, who now goes by “Stevie,” said his wife and their six children accepted his new identity right away.
“We told them individually. Some were in person and some weren’t,” Crecelius said. “Every one of them said, ‘We don’t care one way or the other. We love you for who you are and you’re still my dad.'”
Crecelius and his wife, Debbie, have been together for 25 years and she’s supported him every step of the way, including taking him to buy his first bra.
She told Crecelius, “You know, when I first saw you, I said to myself, ‘He runs like a girl.'”
“I think we were pretty good when she began to mourn the loss of her husband,” Crecelius said. “We worked through what we needed to. The concept of unconditional love is a larger story.”
You see, how all this is reported as some kind of wonderful story. I’ve got to wonder how the kids really felt about this.
And what’s the deal with buying a bra? Does he need a bra?
I think the thing that weirds me out the most about this is the whole thought that you have no choice about who you are. They found some internal organs of a woman, so now you have to start wearing a bra? And isn’t this exactly the oppositte thing we’re told about people who change their gender? Transgender folks and their allies argue that while they were born with certain parts they know different and so they change their gender and make themselves who they feel they want to be. So why, then, is the presence of certain internal organs force Steve to start wearing bras? Doesn’t this actually go against what they’ve been arguing for years?

Perhaps it means that human developement is not binary but a spectrum. Awkward since Colorado doesn't allow same sex marriage.

The real question is: what do his genes say?
Of course, if he is genetically female, then he couldn't be the father of those children, so he must be male, in which case this story is deliberately hiding information. If he's not male, then the Mrs. has some 'splainin to do about the kids, and a declaration of nullity is in order.

I'd look at the issue by nature. By nature, a man can impregnate a woman while not being impregnated.
If he had six kids with his wife, then the seed worked. The extraneous organs are disordered, but by nature he's still a man, and his marriage is valid since he fulfilled hi role in the marital embrace.
In other words, he is a guy, no matter what the doctors say.

Yep, I'm thinking he had that male thing down pat.

Something is missing… to the story I mean.
Life gets to be more like the Twilight Zone every day.

It's not so much that life is like the Twilight Zone, as it is that the reported "news" is so often like reading science fiction.

I only saw a brief thing on this on the news–Fox news in Denver that has something about gays every day–but did not know the story. When you see him dressed up like a girl, you still KNOW he is a guy.

50c says that he is a chimera— that is, he's totally male, except for a lost twin sister. His body absorbed part of her.
Some researchers think it's fairly common, we just don't know because one doesn't take a bunch of DNA samples from different areas of the same person.
May 26, 2012 at 6:29 pm
Always assuming that the facts are as reported, of course.

He's classified as a male, since he evidently has a Y chromosome…even Klinefelter Syndrome patients are males (2 X chromosomes, and a Y chromosome).
I'm not sure what makes one 'intersex,' and evidently he's not having any male fertility problem. To the wife's point about his running-so? Lots of guys have dumb running styles.

This society is just looking for new and perverse ways to allow and encourage people to live in their psychoses. What does he have to say about his penis?…that evidently worked pretty well??? Or is it now totally ignored and shunned like barack obama's MORE than 50% white side?

This is a "picky librarian" request. Please add an "s" to the word "discover". "Father…Discovers He's a Woman". Thank you!

They want to have it ALL ways. Homosexuals were "born this way" and transgenders were born one way but want to be another. You would think they'd be at cross-purposes…but it all comes down to I want what I want, what makes me feel good. It makes no sense and never will. This is just another example.

I find it interesting that he has been living as a man for so long that as soon as he finds out he has female organs, he throws it all away. How can he discount the many years as living as a male? Such a strange and odd story. There must be something missing from this story.

I know someone who has two X chromosomes and a Y chromosome (kleinfelter's syndrome) which is what this sounds like. People with this chromosomal disorder are males, because it is the presence of a Y chromosome that makes you a male. Absence of a Y chromosome makes you a female. My friend's story is in various ways similar to this, though my friend had a very short lived marriage to a woman and no children. My friend had some gender confusion, some confused sexuality, but last I heard he affirms that he is a man and desires to live in a normal way and according to a Christian morality, as a man.
I also have an uncle who is as far as I know a physically normal man, was husband to my aunt and father of my two cousins, and decided he felt like a woman and divorced my aunt and began dressing and living as if he were a woman, and feminized his name. They were Unitarian Universalists, a religion that simply believes in "be true to your own principles" whatsoever they may be, I think they felt it was compassionate to make no serious objection to husband and father leaving his family to live as a woman, and that he was being true to the principle to do whatever it was he thought best.

The point of the story is that when a "professional" nurse TOLD him that he was a woman, he, as Cheri said, throws it all away. Nothing changed. I think too, that Foxfire is correct about him being a chimera. The twin who does not make it has been found in ovaries, brains and other parts of the individual who does survive. Tiny human bodies the size of a thumb nail or smaller have been found intact in the organs of the surviving twin. There too, are people who are hermaphrodites, and have both sets of sex organs. They marry and have normal lives. Aristotle said that a woman was a defective man but he was only half right. Medical science has learned that if a foetus' sex organs are damaged by disease, the body will compensate by producing the opposite sex organs. It would appear that if the original set recovered, then the body would have both sets of sex organs. I think this may account for some people behaving like a the opposite sex. Why this man upsets his family over nothing new is beyond me.

This whole "story" likely has been composed, presented and exploited for ideological/political purposes.

Why are his first thoughts about what bras to buy? The moment someone told me I had some spare girlie parts I'd pry them out myself with a shrimp fork if they left me alone for five minutes.
Something tells me he's been repressing a whole lot of lady for a long, long time.
May 29, 2012 at 3:07 pm
My suspicion is that he was either on some sort of male hormones BEFORE or went on female hormones after finding out about the previously unknown organs.
It seems unlikely that breasts began developing on their own simply because his conscious mind discovered he had traits of both genders.
May 29, 2012 at 3:33 pm
I believe it mentioned that he started taking female hormones.
