It is sad that the nation cannot be granted even the smallest window to grieve without politics coming to the fore. I wish I could just ignore it all, but I can’t because liberty is at stake.
What progressives and their cohorts in the media always do is try to use language to frame a given debate in their favor. They have wanted your guns for a long time and they think they can use dead children to get it.
All weekend long, the media reported on the massacre and politicians screamed about the need for gun control. As most people would love to do something to prevent something like this from ever happening again, they are receptive to such messages.
All weekend long the media has reported that Adam Lanza used a “high powered rifle” and “assault style weapon” to kill. See Below
For heaven’s sake, why would anyone need a “high powered rifle” or “assault style weapon?”
But these terms are loaded lies of unspecified definition pre-determined to sway people.
Ask them what an assault style weapon is? A semi-automatic? Most rifles sold in this country are semi-automatic, meaning one bullet per trigger pull. These are not Al Capone Tommy guns. These are the same ordinary guns that many people own responsibly.
What is “assault style? Truth is, there is no definition?
What is a high-powered rifle by the media definition?
Let’s look at some facts.
Lanza used and AR-15 semi-automatic rifle with .223 caliber ammunition. Fact.
Here is another fact. That combination of weapon and ammo is banned in several states for deer hunting purposes. Know why? They consider it too weak. It is not strong enough at distance to ensure an ethical harvest. That kind of combination of weapon and ammo is most suitable to ‘varmint’ shooting.
Of course, at close range this weapon can kill effectively as almost every other type of gun can and tragically has.
These people want to ban almost all guns and they will use dead children and lies to advance their cause. Don’t be fooled.

I would just point out that arming herself for protection didn't work out so well for Nancy Lanza…

Moms trust sons. She would have been ready for a stranger who was breaking her window.

Very few people use twenty twos for self defense.
A concealed carry pistol worked out very well for the people in that Portland mall– a guy was packing one even though it would get him kicked out if management found out, and pulled on the gunman there. That's why, on a busy shopping day shortly before Christmas, only two innocents were killed. He didn't even have to fire a shot.
But I'm sure you'd feel much better if the Lanza psychopath had used a kitchen knife or club on his mother, as is more common when the unmedicated turn to murder.

My question to progressives is if we ban guns should we ban cars too. Afterall, people get killed by drunk drivers by people who shouldn't be driving in the first place.

I am opting out of this conversation now. I put forth a point of view supporting a thoughtful contribution by a Brother across the pond, and for my trouble, am now the subject of ad hominem comments which serve no purpose and are uncharitable at that. My husband would die laughing at the idea of anyone labeling me a progressive.
Bill, I was very glad to learn that Nancy Lanza was sleeping when her trusted son took her out. Blessings to you this Christmas, and thank you for rationally disagreeing with me. I've enjoyed our exchange.

You stated that you'd told your husband and son that there would be no guns in the house because you would shoot them, misrepresented Jesus as a rhetorical point– all that, in just the first post!
You followed up by attempting to use the murder of the caretaker adult by a mentally disordered child, a far from uncommon event, to rhetorical advantage.
Correcting your mistaken claims and pointing out that many lives were saved by guns used for protection by private citizens is not an "ad hominem," nor are they without purpose.
Facts are often considered uncharitable by those who do not like them.

Br. Tom- I think anyone with a passing knowledge of Ireland and her history will think your comment a little odd! That aside, I know more than one faithful Catholic Irish family who are trying to leave Ireland to come to the US. They claim to see the writing on the wall with regard to the ever increasing erosion of their freedoms as families and Christians. And I cannot help but recall from history that one of the first steps that tyranny takes is to eliminate the ability of a people to physically defend themselves….
The Soviet Union (20 million exterminated?). Nazi Germany… Hitler imposed gun controls in 1938 and started the exterminations one year later. Turkey, China, Uganda, Guatemala, Cambodia… millions and millions and millions rounded up and exterminated. A defenseless population always came first.
These cases do not prove that gun control laws lead to mass murder, but they do illustrate that a defenseless population is a necessary step to criminal control on a mass scale. As much as you find it hard to believe there could be a moral argument in support of legal possession of firearms by the "ordinary" citizen, I find it just as hard to believe that you would deliberately and forcefully deprive another free, law-abiding man or woman of the right to reasonable defense of their family.
I have been in two terrible car accidents caused by two terrible drivers. I have never been shot by a gun. I think about death almost every time I step into my car and wish I never had to use one. Based on my emotions alone, I think I would call for a ban on autos.
Incidentally, I'm a woman. And weaponry makes me squeamish. However, I have been given the gift of reason alongside my emotions… and I thank God for the freedom to defend my family against criminals and tyrants using proportionate means if I choose to do so.
