Man, watching ABC News you might get the idea that nobody would want to be Pope at all. Couple of thoughts about this unrelentingly negative story about the Pope’s resignation and the Church.
The story makes it sound like the Church is disappearing. It’s not. It just isn’t. Also, the story is myopically American whereas the Church is an institution present in every country. Every person ABC interviews in this story wants the Church to “liberalize” on gay marriage, abortion, or women priests. Hmmm. They couldn’t find any orthodox Catholics? Seems kinda’ weird when you think that if you just show up at morning Mass you’re likely to find some pretty serious Catholics who understand the faith a little more than some folks who ABC just stopped on the street.

I, for one, liked the touch of casual racism.
Apparently Asian and Hispanic Catholics don't count.

Great point. Funny how they count for Democrats though, isn't it?

The American Catholic church comprises only about 7.5% of the world's Catholic population. The sheer arrogance that many American Catholics display is astounding, assuming that the church would let the opinions of such a small minority dictate or influence doctrine. I think we Americans sometimes forget there is a larger world out there.

@Jonathan: read anything written in Europe, Latin America, or Asia. They're all just as bad. The only people who even grasp the concept of "the rest of the world" are people who were colonies within living memory, because that "rest of the world" affects them personally.

My favorite comment, "The Church is a 2000+ year old institution that hasn't changed very much.." He says that like it is a baaaad thing. I would say that that is a feature, not a bug.

I guess he'd be amazed that one of the reasons I got interested in converting is because I could count on the Church to continue to be faithful to that age old teaching instead of simply drifting with the times like mainline Protestantism and even contemporary evangelicalism.

MaryMargaret: *The Church is a 2000+ year old institution that hasn't changed very much. *
Sorta like gravity. It keeps our feet on the ground. And our heads upright where they belong.
As the logo says: ABC World News, they should get outta town more and ask other nations what they think of the Church. Myopic.

What a hit job. My Sicilian family couldn't have done that any better.
