Well, the makers of this video have unwittingly and hilariously stumbled on a great motto for the Episcopal Church: “Serve Christ Maybe.” This video is to the tune of the Carly Rae Jepsen hit “Call me Maybe” but instead this has a bunch of people dancing around an Episcopal Church. And you have to watch it until the end to see what I guess is an Episcopal bishop attempting to sing and dance. That will make it worth it, trust me.
The video is an invitation to the 2013 Episcopal Diocese of West Texas Acolyte Festival, hosted by the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, Corpus Christi, Texas, April 19-20, 2013. The kids are great but it just feels so typical doesn’t it, that the Episcopal Church which always struggles to remain so modern, chooses a song that was a hit eight months ago.

Maybe NoT!

When I first saw this, I did in fact *facepalm* at it … yikes. Some of the kids in the video look so enthused too.
The part at the end with the bishop takes all the awkward-ness of the preceding footage, concentrates it, and makes it MUCH more awkward.
Perk of Catholicism: She is timeless. She doesn't need to fit with the times in order to be relevant. Her Lord is Truth, not the world.

Serve Christ… maybe? What a great way to encourage our children in the culture of relativism. Kudos though to the aging gentleman. He depicted well the reason why oldsters shouldn't try to act younger than we are.
Oh, you mean that wasn't the reason for the video?

What an ironic choice of songs. On the other hand, anything that gets kids active in church is good I suppose.
I hoped someone in my church would do a fun parody of a current hit but given the Orthodox concept of "current" I'm afraid they would choose the Macarena.

My children walked in on the dancing bishop and were struck with horror. I explained that this is what happens when you leave the Church and lose Apostolic Succession.
I think that image alone may keep my 5 year old from ever leaving the Church…..

another problem (the biggest being "serve Christ MAYBE") is that the listener will not be able to separate this song from the first secular, racy version- search on youtube for the video- triple yuck

Let's be charitable. Their altar was ad orientem with an altar rail for kneeling communion. Your average Catholic parish hasn't seen a thurifer in 50 years. While they may endorse all sorts of non-Romish doctrine, at least they have liturgy correct.

Robert, gestures are meaningless without the Holy Sacrifice.

Ah, but what is the liturgy without the Real Presence. Just show without substance.

Granted, their prayer gives them graces as it is worship towards the One True God, but the elements that we use to show that the Mass is the Sacrifice are empty without the actual sacrifice.

The bishop watched Saturday Night Fever one time too many.

@ Matthew and Andrea:
I always find this response to be the lamentable knee-jerk defense we Catholics use whenever we see that others do Catholic liturgy better than we do (on the whole at least). I wasn't commenting on the sacramental value of their liturgy, just that they seem to understand liturgical aesthetics well. I don't know if these things are necessarily empty, only God does. We don't know for sure that God gives grace through these acts ex opere operato, but we may hope He does. Even if these acts are of no salvific merit, we can still assume that it at the very least these acts inspire wonder and awe for an imperfectly (in their case) understood deity in these people in a similar way to what we experience when we go to mass.

@robert
I see a third fear about once per month or so. Roughly. I'm not 50 and I've seen it MANY times. No I agree with some of your softer sentiments, but I think the "worship Jesus…MAYBE' is worthy of at least an eye roll, perhaps open mockery. I think the modernization of the episcopalians has helped us to see why it should never be done in the a Catholic Church. I hope the faithful come home to the RCC and I hope the remaining episcopalians aren't led astray too much.
The world needs to be more like the Church and not the other way around.

It reminds of the video that promoted the ordination of women priests.

I did a google search for this video to see if I could figure out why it suddenly got so many negative votes on YouTube. I found this site. You people are the epitome of hypocrisy – sitting there in your armchairs sneering at kids who are inviting other kids to their acolyte festival – kids who are actually out there serving as the hands of Christ. If you spent as much time "serving Christ" as you do making assumptions and trying to look smug on message boards, this world would be a better place. I'd say I feel sorry for you, but you choose to be blind and hateful. Get off your ass and get out there and be Christians. I grew up in the Diocese that put this out, and you won't find a more Christ-centered, amazing bunch out there. And yes, that is a bishop at the end, and yes, he's fantastic. Get a life.
