It is finally here!! Tomorrow is the day my baby chicks arrive!
I am putting finishing touches on the brooder and the coop is a work in progress. I have 5 weeks to finish that!
The kids are very excited. We will be getting 6 chicks in total. 3 Barred Plymouths and 3 Red Cross (a variation on Rhode Island Reds)
My kids asked if they could name them. I said sure as long as the names are Nugget, Extra-Crispy, Cordon Bleu etc…
We are getting them for the eggs, but when the egg laying is done, the pot awaits.
Very excited!!

Congratulations. I have been wanting to do this for a while, but it is banned within my city limits.

Remember,
Keep the PeTA wackos away from you and tell them your "only concern" is thinking of your ckickens' "feelings and rights"…;)

We have some friends with a farm. Last year they raised a pig for us (the wife took the kids up to help on the farm for a few weeks, spread out over the summer). Our stipulation on naming them was similar.
The kids went with "Bacon". So every time we have pork now it's Bacon, no matter the cut of meat.

My chicks now have beautiful feathers. There's four different breeds, the rocks have seen two of their fellow birds go to heaven. One by it's own demise and one via death by beagle. There are 10 remaining and it is hard to name them since they won't stand still. Looking forward to the point in time when they will be too chubby to slip through the fence. Until then they are confined to one of my raised garden beds. Looking forward to all those brown and blue eggs.

Not enough chickens! Fresh eggs are really good and your children will be so excited about them at first that you will not get enough eggs for everyone to have eggs as often as they want. I say you need a few more chickens. (probably because I am NOT getting chickens this Spring)

I'm reading late. . . .
What fun! (I raise chickens, too.) How are they doing? How are you kids doing with them?
Forget the stew pot. After 2 – 3 years of egg-laying and running around, the birds will be too tough. Do as I do. . . send them to a new home, where they will be appreciated simply for eating lots of bugs. I.e., garden patrol.
