My five year old is a kindergarten graduate so she’s home now and was watching television today. On came Max and Ruby, a cartoon about two child rabbits who live without any parent in sight, and still find ways to be so mind numbingly boring that I was hoping the storm would cause a blackout.
My five year old looked up at me shocked and said, “Ha, this is still on?!” as if she’d been away from television for years and was shocked to see an old favorite was still on. At the end of the show, Nickelodeon posted that the episode of Max and Ruby taught children about conflict resolution.
My five year old looked up at me and pointed at the television, saying, “I’m telling you right now Dad I didn’t learn anything from Max and Ruby. They’re lying.”
I agreed.
Then she asked to watch Justice League while she pulled all the cushions off the couch so she could jump off the couch and pretend to fight bad guys. She said at least Justice League taught her how to fight bad guys.

My husband always wonders at the fact that these kids– age 7 and 2– are allowed to mull about with no parental supervision.
I actually kinda like Max & Ruby. Except for the fact that Ruby is always trying to emasculate Max. Lots of gender stuff going on there. 🙂

Now she knows.. and knowing is half the battle.

The Max and Ruby books are MUCH better than the Max and Ruby television show. In the books, the subtext is that the mother has given Ruby the job of watching Max (I always thought she was closer to 9, and I got stuck babysitting my brothers at that age!) and that she uses it as an excuse to be completely bossy and nagging. The humor comes from Max doing his own thing while Ruby tries to control a toddler.
Bunny Cake, Bunny Mail, and Bunny Money are all huge favorites at our house. Oh! Also the one where Ruby tries to make Max clean his room…..

Anyway, the 'lesson' of the books is "Don't let your obnoxious big sister boss you around….." my sons really relate…..

I always hope for an episode where Max's repressed anger is unleashed. Still waiting.
