First you had CBS News using the song “Africa” by Toto to cover Nelson Mandela’s death. Then you had President Obama taking selfies and yucking it up at his memorial service. And now, in a completely wackadoo turn of events, it turns out that the sign language interpreter may have been totally faking it.
Completely.
To watch him is pretty strange because he seems to forget to sign once in a while even though someone’s talking and then when he does he simply seems to make the same three symbols over and over again.
Watch him for a few minutes here and laugh or cry – whatever emotion this silliness elicits from you:
It’s being reported in a bunch of places that this dude is totally faking it but we’ll see. It looks fake to me but what do I know.

Any man or woman should be memorialized with reverence for God and dignity for the person. The funeral should be in the church of the departed, not in a gym, a soccer pitch, stadium, or other secular space.

Yes, multiple organizations for the deaf (including those in S. Africa) have confirmed that it was completely fake. His signs meant nothing whatsoever. The S. African government is supposed to release an official statement soon, after the uproar over the fake interpreter.

How much can a man know if he does not know that the newly begotten human soul is a sovereign person?

If a large crowd is expected, it's often impractical for the public service to be held in a church. Our archbishop's inauguration was in a large convention centre.

As someone who sometimes interprets for the Deaf, I can tell you that pauses in signing does not necessarily mean the interpreter forgot to sign. Sometimes a string of words can be reduced to one sign. Sometimes the interpreter is waiting for the context of the language to know which sign to use.
