This is priceless. Politico is concerned that Senator Lindsey Graham’s effort to pass legislation that would ban abortions after 20 weeks might hurt other Republicans. Isn’t that sweet?
But I think it’s an oddly placed sympathy in that polls indicate great support for such a ban.
Perhaps, Politico should be worried about Democrats who oppose it and what happens to them. They could interview Wendy Davis of Texas who filibustered a similar bill and ended up becoming a media darling and destroying her political career.
Sen. Lindsey Graham is renewing a GOP push for a 20-week abortion ban — a bid that could boost his long-shot presidential campaign but spell trouble for vulnerable GOP senators up for reelection in swing states next year.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) earlier promised a vote on the hot-button bill, which already passed the House. Abortion foes say a vote in the Senate would be a historical milestone, the most consequential vote on the issue in more than a decade.
But Graham’s effort threatens to hand political ammunition to Democrats trying to knock off GOP senators in purple and blue states that will decide Senate control after the 2016 election. Among them are Rob Portman of Ohio, Kelly Ayotte of New Hampshire, Ron Johnson of Wisconsin and Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania.
No word from Politico if they’re worried about “pro-life” Democrats. I’d actually be interested to see what “pro-life” Democrat senators would vote on the issue. Something tells me they’d hem and haw at first about a rape and incest loophole and then if that was put in they’d vote for it only because Obama had promised to veto it.
But even then Republican presidential candidates can constantly refer to this legislation have the much ballyhooed “bipartisan support” which people seem to like. And that makes it harder for Democrats to attack those in support of the legislation.
This is an attempt by Politico to frighten Republicans away from seeking to pass legislation protecting life. I hope that for once Republicans show some spine. I know. I know.
