I’m actually not kidding. That’s pretty much what they say.
Some idiot Harvard Law professor put his pom moms on for Chinese style censorship. These guys hate people. They certainly hate Americans.
Here’s what he wrote: “In the great debate of the past two decades about freedom versus control of the network, China was largely right and the United States was largely wrong. Significant monitoring and speech control are inevitable components of a mature and flourishing internet, and governments must play a large role in these practices to ensure that the internet is compatible with a society’s norms and values.”
Do these people have no historical awareness of where this ends? Gulags. Gas chambers.
You must be silenced when you differ from the blue checkmark mafia. The elites decide which speech is permitted lest the other proles might get the wrong idea.
We live in a very dangerous time. That’s the new normal. We are on the precipice of oligarchy or revolt. You will either accept your elite overlords or you won’t. If you don’t then things will get messy.

The internet more or less mirrors society and so this argument amounts to, "what you see in the mirror is not a reflection of what is."
How stupid is that?

Well and bravely said.
In a connected aside, I recently asked a question on a Catholic Bible site about whether a certain new edition of the Bible would be printed in China. The question was neither posted nor answered.
I was not snarking; I was asking a reasonable question that should have been answered. A thoughtful Christian would no more want a Bible with "Printed in China" on the title page than he or she would want one from the 1930s or 1940s with "Printed in Auschwitz." And yet so many Bibles are now printed by poor men and women suffering under a brutal regime.
The problem of course is not with the true China, an ancient civilization which continues to contribute to humanity in so many ways, but with the bloody occupation of the Middle Kingdom and the suppression of its culture by bloody Communists.

*Significant monitoring and speech control are inevitable components of a mature and flourishing internet … * Who monitors those who do the monitoring? Who defines a mature speech act? As long as speech is lawful, why control it? Can you imagine Mencken, Orwell or Solzhenitsyn approving of China's brutal and malevolent control of the network? This Harvard scholar belongs with the China propagandists like Edgar Snow, exposed scorchingly by Whittaker Chambers.
