Another morning in the great unfolding carnival of late-stage civilization, and what do we find? A light-skinned, dark-haired man, identity still floating in the bureaucratic mist, vaults a fence in the Dutch Kills corner of Queens like some nocturnal spirit of grievance, hammer in hand, and proceeds to decapitate a statue of the Virgin Mary outside St. Rita’s Roman Catholic Church.

Smash.

This is not a one-off spasm of madness. Not some isolated “mental health episode” to be filed away under the usual therapeutic shrug. This is the fourth strike on this single parish since 2024. Stained-glass window shattered. Statue of St. Jude vandalised inside the church. St. Francis of Assisi defaced with the word “PAGAN” sprayed across the pavement like a teenage manifesto. And now the Mother of God herself loses her head to a hammer at dawn.

The Diocese of Brooklyn confirms it. The NYPD Hate Crimes Task Force is “investigating.” The cameras caught the leap, the swing, the desecration. And yet the larger pattern is already being ignored.

This is not a standalone event. This is a hot trend. Across cities, across continents, sacred images are being toppled, churches tagged, crucifixes broken, while the cultural commentariat clears its throat and mutters something about “complex root causes.” One man’s hammer becomes another’s “expression.” One parish’s repeated trauma becomes a footnote. The sacred is treated as fair game, the holy as negotiable real estate in the endless culture war.

We’re watching the slow, almost ritualistic erosion of the transcendent in public space. Not through grand ideological proclamations, but through these small, nasty acts while the institutions that once defended the sacred look the other way or issue carefully worded statements about “dialogue.” A statue decapitated. Somewhere else a cross is torn down. Somewhere else a nativity scene is torched. And the algorithm keeps scrolling.
