I am ashamed to say I never figured this out. ht New Advent
That is almost as useful as how to tie your shoes. Fact: You are probably doing it wrong. I changed my method a few years ago and it changed my life. My shoes never come untied anymore.

By gum, I'll have to try that. Unfortunately I am wearing slip-on shoes today.

Its just a square (reef) knot really.
Wrap one bow around the other twice instead of once before passing it trough th hole in the middle.
Works great.

I never knew that about the ketchup cups!
But as far as the shoes, I guess I have been tying mine the right way all along, but not quite the way that he shows. I notice that he ties his shoes backward from the way that I do it. I make the initial loop with my right hand; he does it with his left hand (both for the "right" way and for the "wrong" way). But my knot comes out as the "strong form" of the knot that he describes, because it clearly wants to sit sideways along the shoe, not front to back. And my shoes almost never come untied on their own.
I tried tying my shoes the "wrong" way that he showed initially, which meant that I had to make the initial loop with my left hand instead of my right. When I did that, it did come out as a much weaker knot, that wanted to sit front to back instead of sideways. Though it doesn't seem like changing to a mirror image should make a difference.

Totally just a square knot you would learn in scouting.
Just to add as I was teaching my kiddos to tie their shoes, they had such trouble with tying them, we looked up other ways to tie shoes. A Surgeon's Knot is an excellent, easier way to tie shoes, once you get used to it, and it totally stays tied without a double knot.

Whoah. That shoe-tying video just blew my mind. I'm going to have to totally revise my educational shoe-tying song now!

Look up a video called something to the effect of "eat a banana like a monkey." In essence you have been peeling a banana all wrong your whole life. Open it from the other end.
