Remember when the Dixie Chicks went negative on George W. Bush and there was a backlash against them from the country music world. And that was all the evidence needed to prove that America was an intolerant and backward society, right?
Of course, all that happened to the Chicks was that people stopped buying those things the kids call cd’s.
Well, check out what happened when indie singer Michelle Shocked, who’s been a fave of indie folk rock types (meaning liberals ((mostly))) for decades, declared that legalizing gay marriage and forcing priests to perform gay marriage would destroy civilization.
Shocked, who had been considered to be a lesbian until recent years when she became a born again Christian, got shut down by the tolerance Nazis and called “anti-gay.”
Check out the news report from the UK Guardian:
Singer-songwriter Michelle Shocked has shocked fans after launching an anti-gay rant onstage in San Francisco on Sunday night. The singer – who became a favourite of leftwing music fans with early albums such as The Texas Campfire Tapes and Short Sharp Shocked, but who is now a born-again Christian – began telling the crowd her views of Proposition 8, California’s legal definition of marriage being a union between a woman and a man.
“When they stop Prop 8 and force priests at gunpoint to marry gays, it will be the downfall of civilisation, and Jesus will come back,” Shocked told the crowd at Yoshi’s in San Francisco, before many of them reportedly walked out. “You are going to leave here and tell people, ‘Michelle Shocked said God hates faggots.'”
The club’s manager tried to end the show, but Shocked continued playing until venue staff pulled the plug and turned off the stage lights…
Audience members at Sunday’s show were stunned by her remarks. “She said gay marriage would cause the end of the world,” tweeted @anile02. “She’s a total bigot and said so on stage,” agreed @lisahubbert. “It was unreal. We had to leave.” @TheGuapo said he felt like an “emotional hostage”: “[she] went full hate speech”.
Several venues – in Illinois, California, Oregon and Colorado – have now cancelled forthcoming shows.
Shocked has not directly responded to these developments, except to tweet: “Truth is leading to painful confrontation.”
Now, of course God doesn’t hate anybody. But the way I’m reading what Michelle Shocked said about God hating gay people was that she was saying that those people who were leaving would misconstrue what she said and were going go tell people that Michelle Shocked said God hates gay people. I wasn’t there but that’s how it reads to me.
In fact, I just found a transcript of sorts of the exchange at a small San Fran paper and I think it proves me right.
In response to audience reaction, Shocked offered a Spanish prayer that “God loves you. God loves us. God loves us all everywhere.” Later, in English, she said: “God bless us everyone.”
Many fans questioned the singer out loud: “What are you saying?”
With a broad smile, Shocked said. “You are going to leave here and tell people ‘Michelle Shocked said God hates faggots.'”
The media is labeling what Shocked did as a “rant” and a “tirade.”
It seems to me that she said she’s against gay marriage and against forcing priests to perform gay marriage but she also said that God loves everyone. But that’s clearly a position that cannot be held in society any longer.
It’ll sure be interesting to hear how the left’s reaction to Michelle Shocked proves that America is a backwards and intolerant society.
