Love, or what we understand as love, can cause horrors and wars. That is why we are ordered to love God first. Love God above all things. Otherwise, what would I not do for love of my family and children?
Would I sign up for the Nazi party when told that if I didn’t my children would starve?
Would I turn in the Jews I knew my neighbor was hiding if my wife were at gunpoint?
Would I remain silent so as to avoid being cancelled and losing my job so I wouldn’t be able to afford college for my children?
In this case of worldly love, we exclude from our morality that which we love less or not at all.
Love of God first makes our path clear.
