It appears the NYPD have captured the man responsible for the attempted Times Square bombing. He was trying to get on a plane to Dubai. Great Job.

Unfortunately, the suspect is not what New York mayor Michael Bloomberg had hoped for.

“If I had to guess 25 cents, this would be exactly that. Homegrown, or maybe a mentally deranged person, or somebody with a political agenda that doesn’t like the health care bill or something. It could be anything,” he said.

Yup, ’cause when somebody tries to kill thousands of people in New York it usually is somebody who thinks the government should respect the Constitution.

Despite the mayor’s deepest desires, it turns out the the suspect is just the same ol’ same ol’ when it comes to attempted mass murderers.

NEW YORK – Authorities arrested a U.S. citizen in connection with the failed bombing attempt in New York’s Times Square as he tried to leave the country, Attorney General Eric Holder said Tuesday.

Faisal Shahzad, 30, was arrested at 11:45 p.m. ET Monday night by Customs and Border Protection agents as he attempted to board an Emirates airlines flight to Dubai at New York’s JFK airport, officials said.

“It is clear that the intent behind this terrorist act was to kill Americans,” Holder said.

We don’t know much yet but the NBC report goes on to say…

Shahzad, a naturalized U.S. citizen who was born in Pakistan, was accused of driving a car bomb into Times Square, authorities said. He will appear in Manhattan Federal Court later Tuesday.

Earlier, officials told The Associated Press that the suspect recently returned from a trip to Pakistan, where he has a wife. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because the case was at a sensitive stage.

Bloomberg, for his part, hasn’t given up hope that a tea partier will kill somebody some day. In the meantime, the Mayor has taken the now commonplace step of banning tea in all New York City restaurants.

No word yet on what Shahzad thinks about the health-care bill.
