Nadya Suleman, better known as Octomom, admits that she was not in the right state of mind when she, single and mother of 6 children already, underwent more IVF to have 8 more children. From the NYDaily News:
Nadya Suleman will do anything for her octuplets, but now she admits it was a mistake to have them.
The mother of 14, who recently posed nude to earn rent money for her family, has revealed she thinks it was a bad decision to undergo fertility treatments after already having six babies.
“Was it a mistake to go back and have IVF after having six children already?” NBC News Dateline correspondent Tamron Hall asked in an interview that aired Friday night.
“Yes,” Suleman said. “Absolutely. Was I in my lucid state of mind? I don’t know at that point. I could rationalize myself away and I’m good at rationalizing.”
Nadya, dear, you are not alone. I think the entire country is good at rationalizing the realities of IVF. While most other countries have strict rules regulating IVF, the United States has decided to let fertility docs “regulate” themselves. The US is the fertility Wild Wild West where an unmarried mother of 6, whose is not her her right mind, can have her every wish fulfilled without any thought for the children that are being mass-produced.
Our current situation began with this bit of rationalizing about “reproductive rights” not actually in the Constitution by the US Supreme Court and it continues unabated:
“If the right of privacy means anything, it is the right of the
individual, married or single, to be free from unwarranted governmental
intrusion into matters so fundamentally affecting a person as the
decision whether to bear or beget a child.”
Our unregulated fertility industry will continue unabated, even onto reproductive cloning, until we figure out we do not have a “right” to reproduce. A child is a gift not a right.
