I just received this very sad news. An amazing woman.

Sister Joseph Mary Powell, O.P., a member of the Dominican Sisters of St. Cecilia Congregation in Nashville, Tennessee for 41 years, died Friday, May 12, 2017 at St. Cecilia Convent in Nashville after a lengthy illness.  She was born in 1950 in Chattanooga, Tennessee, to Conrad M. and Mabel Bishop Powell, both of Chattanooga. 

She entered the Dominican Sisters of St. Cecilia in 1974 and professed vows in 1976. Sister Joseph Mary served for a number of years in elementary and secondary schools staffed by the Dominican Sisters of St. Cecilia; and for over 10 years she served as a nurse caring for the sisters in the convent infirmary.  For the past six years Sister Joseph Mary served in the Congregation’s Advancement Office at St. Cecilia Convent. She was preceded in death by her parents, and by her brother, Robert Powell of Chattanooga.  Sister
Joseph Mary is survived by her Sister-in-law, Mrs. Robert Powell (Jan) of Chattanooga. 

Visitation will be at St. Cecilia Convent on Sunday, May 14 from 1:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. and 6:30 – 8:00 p.m.; and Monday, May 15 from 10:00 a.m. – noon; and 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. The funeral Mass will take place in the convent chapel (801 Dominican Drive) on Monday, May 15, 2017 at 3:30 p.m., with burial to follow in the convent cemetery.
