Things are getting dark out there for our country and our beloved Church. I found myself looking for angles to see how it all could be salvaged. In the end, I concluded there really is no earthly means of our country surviving or our Church.

There really isn’t much hope. Or as Gandalf said…it was always a fool’s hope.

But that is what we should be. Tolkien chose his words carefully.

St. Paul writes: “Do not deceive yourselves. If any one of you thinks he is wise by the standards of this age, he should become a ‘fool’ so that he may become wise. For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in God’s sight. As it is written: ‘He catches the wise in their craftiness’ and again, ‘The Lord knows that the thoughts of the wise are futile.’ So then, no more boasting about men!” (1 Cor 3:18-21)

To be a fool for Christ is to be mocked and hated by this world and held in derision. But that is our hope. Riley Gaines, the swimmer from Kentucky is speaking out about her faith and how men are not women. For promulgating sanity she is attacked, scorned, and derided. But she persists.

Those who pray in front of abortion clinics are often derided as fools, just as are those praying the rosary after daily Mass in the morning. Fools! All of them.

We have only a fool’s hope of turning this around. We are not responsible for the world. We just must do what we can with the time given to us in our little corner of the world. Be willing to be the fool.

When people on Facebook threaten to block you for saying that all life is sacred, persist. When they call you names, continue. When they attack, keep moving. God can work miracles but we should do our part.

Let’s all be fools for Christ.
