About five years ago my daughter was on a summer basketball team. The dad of one of the girls on the team agreed to coach. In one of the games a boy suited up for the other team and was actually pretty good. The girls were getting ticked off that this boy was scoring so much and roughing them up. Interestingly, the one player who “ran like a girl” on the court was the boy.

One of the girls came off the court and asked the coach why he didn’t object to a boy playing for the other team. He said, “Oh, it’s because I don’t want to be on the 11 o’clock news.”

To be fair, the guy ran a business. He was just a dad who wanted to spend more time with his daughter and teach the girls about a game he loved. Did he really want to put everything in jeopardy to stop a boy from playing in a girl’s game? Is this the hill he wanted to die on?

Fortunately, people like Riley Gaines are standing up. But unless we all do, this will continue.

The coach ended up putting in my daughter who roughed up the boy and he started missing his shots. So…happy ending. We won.
