Can we just stop pretending here for a second. Dan Shaughnessy said he’s not voting for Curt Schilling for the baseball Hall of Fame because he tweeted out a joke about hanging journalists.

AP:

Former Cy Young award winner Curt Schilling has lost Dan Shaughnessy’s vote for the Hall of Fame after the pitcher applauded a shirt threatening violence to the media at a Donald Trump rally.
“Count me out on Curt Schilling,” Shaughnessy wrote. “I have held my nose and voted for the Big Blowhard in recent years (11-2 in postseason, ridiculous walk/strikeout ratio), and he was up to 52.3 percent (75 percent required) last year, but I shall invoke the “character” clause this year. Schill has transitioned from a mere nuisance to an actual menace to society. His tweet supporting the lynching of journalists was the last straw for this voter. Curt later claimed he was joking. Swell.”
Schilling has been criticized for his social media habits and was fired from his analyst position at ESPN due to some insensitive posts.
The shirt read “Rope. Tree. Journalist. Some Assembly Required” and Schilling shared the image with the caption, “Ok, so much awesome here . . .”
Schilling later said that he was being sarcastic.

Let’s face it. It had nothing to do with him tweeting out a stupid joke. While it was unwise of Schilling, it’s not the real reason this writer is not going to vote Schilling in to the Hall even though Schilling deserves entry. It’s because Schilling is a conservative, an outspoken one. If some liberal former player had sent out something similar it would be seen as irascible in an amusing way.

Schilling might very well be refused entry into the HOF because he dares to be an outspoken conservative. This, by the people who claim they’re tolerant and inclusive.
