The former Archbishop of Canterbury, Lord George Carey, appearing in a video made by the English assisted suicide group Dignity in Dying, argues for assisted suicing, calling it a “profoundly Christian and moral thing.”
This is how the slope gets slippery.
It’s one thing to say that perhaps laws can be constructed to protect the disabled from being killed by such laws (which they can’t) but it’s quite another to call assisted suicide “profoundly Christian.” For many today, suffering is the only true evil in the world. It seems to me that support of assisted suicide completely ignores the redemptive aspects of suffering.
The oddity is that palliative care has never been better. That is not to say that there is no suffering and pain but it’s certainly never been better.
