You go girl. I love to see liberal Supreme Court Justice Ruth Vader Ginsburg keep on keepin’ on. She’s now saying that she’s not retiring because President Barack Obama would not be able to get anyone as awesomely liberal as her through the Senate.
“Who do you think President Obama could appoint at this very day, given the boundaries that we have?” the 81-year-old justice told Elle Magazine in an interview excerpt released Tuesday. The wide-ranging interview portrays Ginsburg — seen as a member of the court’s liberal wing — as attuned to the dynamics in Congress and some of the greater political and social discussions in the U.S.
In the interview, she suggested that Senate Republicans would likely block any potential nominee like her.
“If I resign any time this year, he could not successfully appoint anyone I would like to see in the court,” the oldest member of the high court said. “[A]nybody who thinks that if I step down, Obama could appoint someone like me, they’re misguided,” later adding that she can “do the job full steam.”
Look, I’m writing this under the assumption that Ginsburg is very intelligent. I’m assuming that. So I have to wonder what has she seen that would make her think that the Senate which recently put Sonia Sotomayor on the bench wouldn’t vote a very liberal replacement in for her?
Her refusal to retire indicates : 1) She doesn’t consider Sotomayor as liberal as her. Hmmm. I don’t see much difference between the two of them myself.
2) She believes the Republicans in the Senate to be a stalwart bunch of bravehearts in which case I have no idea what she’s been paying attention to the last few years.
3) She has an inflated sense of her own importance and a pretty sweet gig so why not keep on.
I’m betting 3 but hey, that’s just me.
