This is a big deal. The Supreme Court upheld the right of government meetings to begin with a prayer. The ruling was 5-4 in favor of the town of Greece, NY. It was a very narrow victory for religious liberty.

The content of the prayer itself is not important as long as the prayer doesn’t denigrate non-Christians or try to win converts, the court said. I have no idea what that part means.

Justice Elena Kagan, of course, strenuously dissented. “I think the Town of Greece’s prayer practices violate that norm of religious equality — the breathtakingly generous constitutional idea that our public institutions belong no less to the Buddhist or Hindu than to the Methodist or Episcopalian.”

So in the name of being breathtakingly generous, Justice Kagan would silence any mention of religion. Maybe those words don’t mean what she thinks they mean.
