What she doesn't mention is that Edward's decision to abdicate was not regarded as "romantic" by a lot of his fellow Englishmen. In fact it led to a political crisis, as many did not regard the abdication as valid and were unwilling to accept the stuttering Duke of York as the real king. There was a widespread perception that Edward was selfish by sacrificing the unity of his people in order to satisfy his own personal desires.
